Jayhawks Take Care Of WVU Potomac State College

Jared Martin hails from Norwich, Connecticut, and attended high school at Springfield Commonwealth Academy in Massachusetts.

But he seemed right at home at the Physical Education Complex over the weekend.

Downright comfortable, as a matter of fact.

The freshman guard scored 13 of his 18 points during a four-minute stretch of the third quarter Sunday evening to help Jamestown Community College build a lead that grew to as many as 19 and it held on for a 70-67 NJCAA victory over WVU Potomac State College in the Jim Riggs Classic.

The win, which came on the heels of a 20-point conquest of CC of Baltimore County Catonsville on Saturday, raised the Jayhawks’ record to 5-7. The Catamounts, who saw a potential game-tying 3-pointer bounce off the rim at the buzzer, fell to 3-8.

“We defended the last shot well,” Jamestown CC head coach Xavier Churnac said, “but we put ourselves in that hole. … We always say we can’t give a team any kind of life. A 20-point lead is not a big lead anymore, it’s not. I’m glad we got the win. We’ve got a couple days to enjoy it.”

Martin’s performance in the two-day event was impressive as he compiled 33 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out 16 assists.

Churnac wasn’t surprised.

“Jared does a lot of things on both ends of the floor, especially offensively,” he said. “We go through him.”

As it turned out, the Jayhawks, who also defeated WVU Postomac State College 78-73 on Nov. 4, needed every single one of Martin’s contributions, because the Catamounts nearly completed a stunning rally.

Trailing 68-52 with 4¢ minutes remaining, the visitors went on a 15-2 run, trimming the deficit to 70-67 following a layup by Juliyen Johnson (22 points, 15 rebounds). And when Jamestown CC was called for an offensive foul with 14.8 seconds remaining, the visitors had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer. But after a timeout, WVU Potomac State’s Cayden Faucett’s contested trey was off the mark as the horn sounded and the Jayhawks survived.

“It’s good to win two in a row,” said Churnac.

Joining Martin in double figures for Jamestown CC were Chad Chambers, who finished with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and zero turnovers in 40 minutes, and Elgin Oliver who contributed 10 points. Traden Gray and Santiago Monero both had 8 points, and Josiah Ransom and Josiah Diaz each had 6.

K’Marion Dowe led the Catamounts with 23 points and Gavin Barkley added 10.

The Jayhawks will be back in action Wednesday when they entertain Niagara County CC. Opening tip is at 7:30 p.m.

SATURDAY

Jamestown Community College put on a defensive clinic in the first half of the first game of the Jim Riggs Classic on Saturday night.

How good was it?

Well, the Jayhawks held CC of Baltimore County Catonsville without a field goal for about 11 minutes, led 44-18 at the break and cruised to an 85-65 NJCAA basketball victory at the Physical Education Complex.

The win improved Jamestown CC to 4-7 on the season, while the Cardinals dropped to 3-6.

After trailing 4-1 two minutes in, Jamestown CC finished the first half on a 43-14 run, which more than held up.

Jared Allen led a balanced attack for the Jayhawks with 15 points and 11 assists; Josiah Ransom and Elgin Oliver each had 12; Traden Gray added 11 points and eight rebounds; and Santiago Manero contributed 10 points.

As a team, Jamestown CC shot 52.6% from the field, including 41% from beyond the arc, and held a 50-31 rebounding edge.

Jalen Yates paced CCBC Catonsville with 21 points; Christopher Johnson had 11 points and 11 rebounds; and Keith Bullock chipped in 10 points. But the Cardinals struggled shooting the ball, connecting on just 37% of its attempts from the floor and only 41% from the foul line.
