Turnovers Costly To Women In 5-Point Defeat

A good share of the stat sheet that was handed out at the completion of Jamestown Community College’s season-opening NJCAA women’s basketball game Wednesday evening was favorable to the Jayhawks.

Consider:

¯ They shot 43% from the floor and held visiting Lakeland CC to 34%.

¯ The hosts also held a 57-37 advantage on the boards.

¯ And they led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter.

And, yet, Coach Dave Turnbull’s crew left the Physical Education Complex with a 68-63 loss.

How did it happen?

It’s spelled T-U-R-N-O-V-E-R-S.

The Jayhawks committed a whopping 47 of them that led to 37 Lakers’ points.

“I don’t know how you turn the ball over 47 times,” Turnbull said. ” … We run press break every single day. No one was where they were supposed to be. They tried to dribble through it rather than run what we run. We’ve got a lot of work to do. We didn’t take care of the basketball.

“Forty-seven turnovers is unbelievable.”

Madison Fueger scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Zion Fussell added 13 to lead Lakeland CC, but it was the Ohio school’s pressure on every made basket that was the difference in the game.

“We have a lot of freshmen who are learning still,” Turnbull said, “so we’re only going to get better. Turning the ball over like that, that’s my fault.”

Jamestown CC was led by freshman Grace Lundmark with 22 points; D’Auzhanay Harden and Zalika Stevens both had 10; and Hannah Hicks added 8 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks, but all three fouled out in the fourth quarter. Without the sophomore trio in the lineup, the Jayhawks still had a chance to pull out the victory, but they couldn’t connect on a couple shots inside the final minute and Lakeland hit three of four free throws in the final 20 seconds to come away with the victory.

The loss spoiled what was an outstanding first game for Lundmark. The Falconer Central School graduate shot 9 of 15 from the floor, grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals, and scored 8 points during a 17-2 run that built the Jayhawks’ lead to 42-27 with 6:45 remaining in the third quarter.

“It doesn’t surprise me, but Grace Lundmark was unbelievable,” Turnbull said. “Grace is one of those kids that just gets better. That was great to see.”

But after building that lead, it was pretty much downhill from there for the Jayhawks.

“We fell apart,” Turnbull said.

A six-minute scoring drought spanning the third and fourth periods allowed the Lakers to lead by as many as eight points and they held on for the win.

Jamestown CC will be back in action Friday and Saturday when it plays in the Cannoneer Classic at Jefferson CC. The Jayhawks open with Bronx Community College at 7 p.m. Saturday.
