Dominating First Quarter Sends Red Raiders Past Orchard Park

The Jamestown girls basketball team conducted a clinic in the first quarter of Thursday night’s Section VI Class AA quarterfinal game.

And just when Orchard Park got within striking distance in the final period, the Red Raiders rebounded nicely — literally and figuratively — en route to a 54-38 victory at McElrath Gymnasium.

What does it all mean?

Well, Coach Ken Ricker’s crew, the fourth seed, will have the daunting task of taking on No. 1 Lancaster in the semifinals at 7 p.m. next Thursday at Sweet Home High School.

“They have an answer for everything,” Ricker said of the Legends, who are ranked second in the state, according to the New York State Sportswriters poll.

But Jamestown (13-8) had all the answers to start the game — junior Marley Drake scored 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, during the hosts’ 21-1 first quarter –and then managed to keep the Quakers (10-11) at bay in the second half when they made it interesting.

Credit for that goes to the inside presence of juniors Kylie O’Brien and Saydee Johnson. Together the 5-foot-10 forwards combined for 21 points and 37 rebounds in an impressive effort in the paint.

That was most evident with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Orchard Park had cut the huge deficit to 40-34 following a jumper by Sarah Bass. Two minutes later, Johnson secured arguably the biggest rebound of the night, got the ball to Alyson Canfield, who found Drake alone behind the arc.

Bang.

Drake’s 3-pointer — she finished with five for the game to give her 153 for her career — pushed the Red Raiders’ lead to 43-34. The Quakers didn’t get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

“This year she’s been impressive,” Ricker said of Drake. “Everybody’s goal is to take her away. She’s been the focal point of other teams. She could play point guard certainly, but she can really shoot it and do other things, too.”

In the early going, it was Drake’s two treys and Canfield’s one, combined with O’Brien and Johnson’s dominance in the low block, that carried Jamestown to the huge lead after the first quarter.

The Quakers, who were playing without the injured 6-foot-4 center Madison Stephenson, couldn’t do anything about it.

“We thought we were going to get ‘this, this and this’ if we ran it right,” Ricker said of his early game plan. “From the beginning, we got Kylie touches inside and we were able to get Marley 10 points (on) two (buckets) off sets and two off transition.”

The Red Raiders, who were blistering hot in the first quarter, didn’t shoot well after that, but they still led 32-19 at halftime and 40-27 heading into the final period.

Drake, who is now second in school history in 3-pointers made behind Anne Campion, led Jamestown with 19 points, O’Brien had 15, Canfield finished with 8, and Johnson and Mickia Freeney both had 6. Freeney, the point guard, played a fine floor game, finishing with nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals; and Johnson also had five steals and three blocks.

Now it’s on to Sweet Home High School next Thursday and a semifinal date with Lancaster, which beat the Red Raiders 87-37 in early January and 69-52 earlier this month.

“We’ll have to have Alyson, Marley and Mickia have their best 3-point shooting of their career,” Ricker said.

Despite the daunting challenge in the upcoming semifinal, Ricker looked on the bright side.

“We have one more week in the gym,” he said.
