Mounted on the wall across the hall from the Jamestown football locker room at Jefferson Middle School is a case that honors four special seasons in program history.

Included in the display are photos of the Red Raiders’ 1994, 1995, 2000 and 2014 New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship teams; a commemorative football from 2014; a proclamation declaring Dec. 1, 2014 as “Jamestown Red Raider Football Team Day” in Jamestown; and a key to the city.

This year’s team would certainly like to add to that impressive collection of memorabilia.

But it still has plenty of work to do.

At 6 p.m. today, the Red Raiders (12-0), the second-ranked team in the state, will take on 12th-ranked Christian Brothers Academy of Section III (7-3) in the Class A semifinals at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. The winner advances to the title game at 3 p.m. a week from today against the Somers-Rye winner at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

“We’re trying to win and extend it one more week and play in that final game,” Jamestown coach Tom Langworthy said. “We want to be 1-0 this week. We can’t win a state title this week, but we can punch our ticket, get in the game and get a place at the table, and that’s the goal.”

The Red Raiders certainly appear to be playing their best football in the last month, a stretch in which they’ve outscored their opponents, 229-42, including a 35-14 win over Canandaigua of Section V in the Far West Regional last week.

The key to stopping Jamestown is obvious.

Doing so, however, is a different matter entirely.

Jaylen Butera, the Red Raiders’ 6-foot-2, 196-pound senior running back, has turned in one of the finest seasons in school history. Entering tonight’s game, he has rushed for 2,138 yards and 35 touchdowns; caught 19 passes for 402 yards and seven TDs; and has returned a punt for another score. The 43 touchdowns are four shy of tying both the school and Western New York record for TDs in a season, held by Aaron Leeper (Class of 2001). Futhermore, Butera is closing in on Leeper’s school-record, single-season rushing mark of 2,276 yards.

“Jaylen certainly has a great deal of talent, but what comes with that is the hard work and dedication and focusing on his craft,” Langworthy said. “Then there’s also his teammates who have helped get him there.

“We don’t talk about individual stats, but when stuff like that pops up, you want to have that good feeling about it because (Butera) is a good person. If it works out that way, and I hope it does, it will be a tough record to break. Think about all these years of football. We’re hitting some high points right now.”

Junior quarterback Trey Drake hasn’t broken any records this fall, but he’s put up some fine numbers nonetheless, completing 82 of 132 passes (62%) for 1,361 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has been intercepted only twice.

Speaking of records, senior linebacker Ben Anderson has put himself atop the Red Raiders’ all-time tackles list with a whopping 151, including 90 solo stops, 10 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. His tackles total eclipses the mark of Stephen Carlson, who had the previous record of 136 in 2014. Junior Sean O’Brien is second on the team in tackles with 124, including 14 sacks. Senior lineman Jarel Farmer is second in sacks with 11.

“It’s a super exciting time,” Langworthy said. “I think getting into the Final Four is really exciting. We feel really good about where we’re at, how we’re playing and our capabilities, but at the same time we understand that every team is going to be good now and it’s going to be a battle, because everyone wants to play at the Dome in the final game. To be able to get there, you have to earn it, so I expect it to be a good game.”

Christian Brothers Academy won’t be an easy out.

Although it has lost three games, it appears the Brothers, who closed the regular season 3-3, are peaking at just the right time. In the playoffs, they upset previously undefeated Indian River, 61-26, in the sectional title game after knocking off Whitesboro in the quarterfinals and Fayetteville-Manilus in the semifinals. In last week’s regional victory, CBA routed Union-Endicott, 42-0, as senior Dan Anderson scored two of his team’s four first-half touchdowns and the Brothers’ defense recorded five of its eight interceptions before the break. CBA junior quarterback Jordan Rae threw for two TDs to sophomore wide receiver Syair Torrence and ran for another in the convincing win.

According to Langworthy, Anderson is a Division I lacrosse player, and Torrence is the Brothers’ best player, who already has a college offer from Syracuse.

“They’ve moved some guys around on both sides of the ball,” Langworthy said in explaining CBA’s turnaround. “(Anderson) is a running back now and, early in the season, I don’t think they were getting the ball to (Torrence) as much. They just had to catch their stride and get their feet underneath them.

“The last three or four weeks they’ve been very dominant, looked very good, looked tough, they’re playing hard and they have a big line, similar to ours. You look at that team and watch the film, you realize why they’re in the Final Four.”

Langworthy hopes that playing an athletic team like Canandaigua last week will benefit the Red Raiders tonight.

“Being in a battle like that I think helps you and will pay dividends this week,” he said.
