Happy Homecoming

Jaylen Butera turned in yet another banner performance in Jamestown’s 35-12 Class A South victory over South Park on Friday night.

That was hardly surprising.

It’s been his modus operandi for the last two seasons.

But in addition to his 192 yards rushing and four touchdowns, the senior running back was also named the school’s homecoming king. While he was briefly fitted with a crown during the halftime ceremony, Butera could have easily shared that honor with a number of his teammates.

In other words, his “court” was pretty good last night, too.

Leading only 7-0 at halftime — Butera’s 1-yard plunge was the lone TD– the Red Raiders (5-0, 4-0) outscored the Sparks (2-3), 28-12, after the break to avenge to some degree a one-point overtime loss to the Buffalo school in last spring’s sectional championship game.

Butera’s other touchdowns were on runs of 1, 7 and 8 yards, but the performances of his supporting cast — namely seniors Ben Anderson and Kyler Nickerson and recent junior-varsity call-up Tyrese Wofford — did not go unnoticed by Jamestown head coach Tom Langworthy.

Anderson rushed for 83 yards on nine carries and made 11 tackles, including three for loss; Nickerson — seeing his first extended play on the first-team defense — was credited with a whopping 16 tackles; and Wofford, a sophomore, picked off a pass in the closing seconds and returned it 95 yards for the final score.

“Ben Anderson is just a really, really good football player,” Langworthy said. “He’s one of our best players, pound for pound. He’s fast, he’s outstanding at linebacker and he’s also a great running back. He and Jaylen had a hot hand tonight and we stayed with it.”

Nickerson, meanwhile, has “stayed with” the program despite being used primarily on special teams.

“Kyler is a perfect example of how to compete and be an athlete,” Langworthy said. “He hasn’t always been in the limelight, but he always shows up with a good attitude and he always has a smile on his face. … Tonight was an opportunity for him. … He came out and did a great job.”

With three games remaining, including next Friday’s test at Hamburg, which lost to Williamsville South, 28-22, last night, the Red Raiders appear to be getting better each week.

Against South Park, it was necessary.

The Sparks were able to move the ball effectively for most of the game, but managed just a pair of touchdowns, which came via a 2-yard run by lightning-fast running back Parrell Fulgham in the third quarter, and quarterback Noah Willoughby’s 31-yard pass to Antonio Halton early in the final period to cut the deficit to 21-12.

But Jamestown answered with a 64-yard drive, capped by Butera’s 8-yard TD with 3:04 remaining, and Wofford ended the game on a high note when he intercepted a Willoughby pass and raced untouched 95 yards for the pick-six. It was the second interception by the Red Raiders. Sincere Green stepped in front of a Willoughby pass in the end zone on the Sparks’ opening drive of the game.

“It was a great win,” Langworthy said. “It’s a game that’s been very important for us for our season this year and also because you always want to be able to avenge (the sectional) loss. South Park is always good, they’re well-coached and they have great athletes, so this is a nice win. I’m really proud of our guys.”
