The Jamestown Tarp Skunks have reached the midpoint of their Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League season and their record compares favorably to most other teams in the league — especially in the West Division.

Entering play Monday evening, Jamestown held a 4 1/2-game lead over the Elmira Pioneers in the division with an 18-7 record.

The Tarp Skunks have 24 games remaining, starting with back-to-back home games against the Newark Pilots and Elmira tonight and Wednesday at Diethrick Park.

Jamestown’s record shows it being successful most nights, although none of the Tarp Skunks’ team statistics jump off the page.

Offensively, Jamestown is batting just .246 on the season, which is tied for 10th in the 15-team PGCBL. The Tarp Skunks’ .332 slugging percentage is ranked 12th.

A couple of offensive numbers that are a little brighter for Jamestown are its on-base percentage (.384), which is ranked third in the league; hit by pitches (49), which is first in the league; stolen bases (73), which is first in the league; sacrifice flies (16), which is first; and sacrifice bunts (7), which is tied for second.

The offensive numbers would seem to lean to the fact that the Tarp Skunks are winning with pitching, but the numbers say that isn’t necessarily the case either.

Jamestown is 10th in earned run average (4.87) and ninth in WHIP (1.52) — which means opponents are getting on base more than once per inning. But the Tarp Skunks pitchers are only allowing a .233 batting average against, which is fourth in the league, and a .312 slugging percentage against, which is tied for fourth in the league.

The overall numbers mean that Jamestown is likely very good in close games. In one-run games, the Tarp Skunks are just 3-2, but in games decided by two runs or less, they are 8-2.

Individually, Jamestown third baseman Luke Turner is fourth in the PGCBL in batting with a .373 average that includes five doubles, a triple and two home runs. Turner has driven in 16 runs and stolen eight bases.

Tarp Skunks center fielder Haiden Hunt is 12th in the league in batting with a .338 average, including five doubles and a league-best 19 stolen bases.

Second baseman Mark Tucker is batting .308 with two doubles and two triples, and has driven in 18 runs, which is third in the league.

On the mound, Jack Laird is seventh among qualified pitchers with a 1.78 earned run average. The right-hander is 3-0 in the four starts, including a complete-game shutout June 18 against Elmira. Laird has 24 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings.

Jamestown’s next best starter ERA-wise has been Cade Swenson, who is just 1-0 in five starts, but has a 2.61 ERA.

Ryan Bradarich is 2-1 in four starts, including a complete-game shutout June 24 against Newark during which he struck out seven and allowed six hits.

Tarp Skunks closer Matt Henson has also been very good. In 11 appearances, Henson has eight saves and a win while striking out eight and allowing six hits in 11 1/3 innings.

The pitching numbers are a lot better when a 17-4 loss to Elmira and a 14-5 loss to Niagara are taken out of the mix.

With a 4 1/2-game lead and 25 games remaining, Jamestown might begin looking toward the postseason where the other two division in the league will loom.

The Utica Blue Sox (11-9) lead the Central Division by a half-game over the Auburn Doubledays (13-11).

The Tarp Skunks’ bigger threats likely reside in the East Division. The Amsterdam Mohawks have the top record in the entire PGCBL with a 20-5 mark. They lead the Saugerties Stallions (16-7) by 3 games.
