WILSON — Sofia Genareo has seen it all at Southwestern.
Coaching changes.
Different star point guards.
A COVID-19 pandemic that affected her senior season in ways she couldn’t imagine.
But through her four years with the Trojans, one thing has remained the same. At the end of the season, she’s a Section VI Class B2 champion.

It happened again — for the final time — Saturday as No. 3 Southwestern rolled to a 63-43 victory over No. 1 Wilson at the Richard J. Zipp Athletic Center near the shores of Lake Ontario.
“This season, despite all of the adversity, I’m so proud of the team and how far we’ve come,” Genareo said postgame. “It does feel good to end on a positive note.”
Freshman Reece Beaver led the Trojans with 28 points and eight assists to go along with four rebounds; sophomore Kira Ricker had 16 points, three rebounds and three assists; and Genareo chipped in 10 points, a team-high 13 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
“These girls are motivated. They were pumped to come in because they wanted that fourth sectional for our school,” said first-year coach Taylor Storer. ” … They’ve worked the entire season to come and get this.”
While a B2 title in years past would mean a mid-week date against the Class B1 champion with a trip to the Far West Regionals on the line, that won’t be the case this season as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association long ago canceled winter state championships due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It definitely hurts knowing that there is nothing more. All four years we haven’t been able to win a crossover game. We lost to Fredonia, East Aurora and Dunkirk,” Genareo said. “This year Depew won. We were really bummed that we can’t keep going, but thankful that there was a season at all.”
The final score was not indicative of how tightly contested the game was, and judging by the fact that the Trojans were comparing their scratches and bruises on the sidelines as they put on their championship T-shirt following the game, they would probably agree.
“It was nice to have some competition in this last game and for them to put up a little bit of a fight,” Storer said. ” … I think that’s important to have a sense that you really earned it.”
The lead changed hands five times in the first quarter and Wilson held a lead into the final minute until Beaver tied the game with 31 seconds remaining. The Lakewomen were then called for a 5-second violation on an inbounds play to give the ball back to Southwestern. A call from the bench was for a foul-line inbounds play, but Beaver took matters into her own hands, popped out for a 3-pointer and calmly sank it at the buzzer to give the Trojans a 14-11 lead.
“Reece has grown as a player tremendously this year,” Storer said. ” … She’s taken on that pressure of being our leading scorer for the most part, along with Sofia.”

Southwestern led the rest of the way.
The Trojans used a 7-0 run in the second quarter to create some distance and Beaver found Lundmark open for a basket in the final 10 seconds of the period to make it an 11-point game at halftime.
Beaver hit three 3-pointers and had a conventional three-point play during the third quarter that opened with a Ricker 3-pointer and closed with Southwestern leading by 14.
“I can’t wait to see all the great things Reece does,” Genareo said.
That gap was plenty as Wilson went just 3 of 11 from the field and was outscored 12-2 in the fourth quarter before scoring on two of its final three possessions.
“They were trying to quicken the pace of the game,” Storer said. ” … If we slowed it down and played our game, got our good, clean shot, we were alright.”
The final buzzer set off a muted celebration on Wilson’s home court, but the Trojans had plenty of time to celebrate on their long bus ride.
“Grateful is the best word — not only for the athletes that I’ve been able to coach, but for who they are as girls,” Storer said of the opportunity to coach the Trojans. ” … They are some of the hardest-working high school girls I’ve had the blessing to coach.”
As they left the gym, the Trojans were greeted by a small group of Southwestern parents who made the two-hour trip north to Niagara County and waited all game in the parking lot because only home spectators were allowed in the gym for the title game.
Such is life during COVID-19.
NOTES: Senior Allison Lundmark had 7 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals for Southwestern. … The Trojans shot 39.3% (22 of 56) from the field, including 42.3% (11 of 26) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 16 times. … Julia Faery led Wilson with 15 points, Bella Lemke had 12 and Maddy Seely had 8. … The Lakewomen shot 32.2% (19 of 59) from the field, including 23.1% (3 of 13) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 14 times.
