FREWSBURG — Despite a scoreless first half, Frewsburg coach Scott Stone remained confident in his girls Wednesday.

The Bears showed why in the second half.

Frewsburg scored four goals, including three during an 11-minute span, and shut out No. 3 Portville, 4-0, in a Section VI Class C semifinal at the Robert H. Jackson Athletic Complex.

“We controlled the game in the first half. We had a bunch of chances, we just didn’t finish them,” Stone said Wednesday evening. “We were totally comfortable with where we were at. We kept the pressure up and it finally came.”

Next up for the second-seeded Bears will be a Saturday showdown with No. 5 Chautauqua Lake, which beat No. 8 Westfield/Brocton in Wednesday’s other semifinal. The Bears will be seeking their second straight sectional title.

“They are the fastest team we’ve played,” Stone said of the Thunderbirds. “They are well-coached and they play extremely hard. … We expect them to play their best game on Saturday.”

Kendal Sohl opened the scoring in the 43rd minute Wednesday with her fifth goal of the season for Frewsburg off an assist from Raena Bird.

“Raena made a great play down the wing and beat her player,” Stone said. “She made a 40-yard run and then swung it to the middle where Kendal made a play.”

Reagan Chitester made it 2-0 in the 61st minute on a penalty kick. It was Chitester’s fourth goal of the season.

“Gracie Conlan got the ball deep in the corner, took a girl one-on-one and then got fouled,” Stone said. “Reagan is one of the most consistent players we have. When it comes to PKs, there is nobody I have more confidence in than Reagan. She has a calmness about her.”

Tyra Clark added her 13th goal of the season from Alexandra Hultberg in the 68th minute and Makenna McBride made it 4-0 with her fourth of the season from Kaydan Bush in the 72nd minute.

“We just kept the foot on the gas. After two they are kind of reeling,” Stone said. “It’s not easy to get one on us, but we haven’t given up three goals in a long, long time.”

Madison Voty made six saves in the shutout for the Bears.

“Our defense played lights-out,” Stone said. “We held their opportunities to a minimum.”
