Orchard Park Holds Off Southwestern Girls, 60-57

Southwestern had a chance to tie or take the lead with 13 seconds remaining, but couldn’t convert in a 60-57 nonleague girls basketball loss to Orchard Park on Monday afternoon.

Ali Miller led the Quakers with 20 points and Lily Flannery added 14.

“They are a very good team,” Southwestern head coach Dave Turnbull said of Orchard Park. “They have a 6-foot-4 kid (Madison Stevenson) and a 6-foot-1 kid (Sydney Fenn). I was pleased with how we played.”

The Quakers (17-2) took a 21-12 lead out of the gate and never trailed.

“I think we had to adjust to their height,” Turnbull said. “They are tough to handle. They are really big, athletic kids.”

Reece Beaver led the Trojans (10-9) with 18 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Gianna Hoose added 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals while Kira Ricker had 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Sofia Genareo grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals.

PORTVILLE RALLIES

PORTVILLE — Buoyed by a 21-12 third quarter, Portville came from behind to beat Randolph, 65-59, in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East action.

The Panthers (13-5, 7-3) led 18-13 after the first quarter, but Sydney Hvizdzak and Payton Morrison helped the Cardinals (10-10, 5-5) take a five-point halftime lead with a 21-11 second quarter.

“Hvizdzak and Morrison were shooting really, really well,” Portville head coach Inga Welty said. “We had a hard time stopping them in the second quarter.”

The Panthers then outscored Randolph, 36-25, in the second half.

“The fact we had four girls score in double digits made it harder to defend us,” Welty said. “That was probably the deciding factor.”

Karly Welty led Portville with 22 points to go along with five assists and three steals. Lillian Bentley had 12 points; Mallory Welty had 11 points and five assists; Reggie Tkacik had 11 points; and Shayla Wilhelm grabbed 11 rebounds.

Hvizdzak led the Cardinals with 30 points and eight rebounds; Morrison had 15 points; and Kyra Pence had five assists and four steals.
