The lineup is set for the Jamestown Jammers’ Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League opener tonight at Diethrick Park.
Taking the mound for the 7:05 p.m. start against Oneonta is Isaiah Moten from Cal State-Bakersfield. The Temecula, California native went 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in 17 appearances, including five starts, this spring. He struck out 22 in 36 innings.
Backing him up defensively are Brandon Nania of Winston-Salem State at first base; Rashad Stewart, also of Winston-Salem State, at second base: Chris Rubottom of Wofford College at third base; and Alex O’Donnell of Mercyhurst at shortstop. It will be a game-time decision for the starting catcher between Austin Parent of Pitt-Bradford, Max Silverman of St. Anselm and Gino Tortoriello of Rowan-Burlington.
Patrolling the outfield will be Josh Brammell of Patrick Henry Community College in left, Rane Pfeifer of Cal State-Northridge in center and Jeff Timko of Eastern Michigan in right.
“We made it to the Championship Series last year and we have to get to the playoffs again,” Jammers’ manager Anthony Barone said Thursday. “I think with the roster we’ve developed we can have another great season. We’re looking forward to getting back on the field.”
Barone acknowledged that it will be a different style of play this season.
“We had the best pitching staff last year, but it’s a lot easier to pitch when you score eight, nine, 10 runs a game,” he said. “This year we’re not as (strong offensively), but I do like our pitching staff quite a bit and we’re a really good defensive team. … We’ll lean on our pitching staff and our defense to win tight, low-scoring games.”
Barone is the only manager the Jammers have had since the city landed a collegiate wood-bat team in 2015.
“It’s affordable entertainment watching young men develop their skills (as they hope) to move on to the next level of professional baseball,” Barone said. “They’re also guys who really get involved with the community. They really love Jamestown and the way Jamestown supports them.
“The championship run last year really showed what the community brings when they come down to Diethrick Park. We’re so excited for another season and to be able to represent Jamestown and Chautauqua County. … I think we’ve changed the culture of baseball and what to do on a summer night.”
