Thank You To DPW For A Job Well Done

To The Reader’s Forum: I’m writing this letter in regards to a job recently done by Jamestown DPW on a tree on the terrace in front of my property. A large limb hung across the street and into the power lines. The limb had been hit by numerous delivery vehicles and recently a garbage truck. I voiced concern due to the fact that the tree crossed the street and went into the power lines. Recently an employee was examining the tree. I went to speak with him. He introduced himself and I told him the scenario. He told me what the DPW would do. I asked him if there was a time ...

The CLA May Not Have The Lake At Heart

To The Reader’s Forum: The Chautauqua Lake Watershed and Management Alliance consists of villages, towns, property owners and not-for-profit agencies interested in the healthy maintenance of our lake. The memorandum of agreement was developed and signed to achieve a consensus plan for the management of the lake. The prevention of nutrients entering the lake from tributaries and controlling the growth of invasive species (i.e. Eurasian milfoil and curly leaf pondweed) by the proper application of herbicides is an important priority. The Chautauqua Lake Association’s ...

‘Get Over It’

To The Reader’s Forum: The above quote was taken from a press briefing by Mick Mulvaney where he admitted that Donald Trump withheld congressional aid to Ukraine in turn for baseless investigation announcements into the Bidens. Mulvaney added “we do it all the time — Get Over It.” Were you shocked at the outcome of two Senate impeachment votes in the sham Senate trial? Votes to block all inner circle subpoena witnesses testimony and all requested relevant documents. The second vote a pre-determined vote to acquit Trump of the illegal quid pro quo scheme? “Get over ...

Maybe It’s Time To Look At A New Plan

To The Reader’s Forum: It’s obvious now that the Impeachment process envisioned by our Framers doesn’t work. Congressmen and Senators all voted, in both the House and Senate, whichever way would get them reelected. From the day they are first elected, all politicians think about is getting reelected. It would be pretty naive to think they care about right or wrong, the truth, or what’s good for the country. So, here is a suggestion for a new plan that might work better: 1. Abolish the Senate. It’s an archaic institution, set up in colonial times when people felt more ...

The Real Joke In The City Is The Roads

To The Reader’s Forum: How wonderful that the National Comedy Center has been nominated for “the best new museum.” It’s too bad that the biggest joke is the roads in Jamestown. It is always the same roads and pot holes that need fixed. If Jamestown wants to make a good impression with tourists, they should focus on the main roads in and out of the city. North Main is terrible. The locals would be happy too! Rebecca Carlsson Falconer

Libraries Are More Than A Warehouse For Books

To The Reader’s Forum: If you think that libraries are no longer relevant in the age of Google and Alexa, then you haven’t stood outside of the James Prendergast Libary on a Saturday morning at 9:50. I was there this past Saturday with at least a dozen other people waiting for the doors to open. Libraries are not just a warehouse for books; they are the center of a community. They provide literacy training for children and adults, computer training, access to computers and free WiFi, foreign language instruction, DVDs, CDs, print books and ebooks, newspapers, meeting spaces, tax ...
