What Has Happened To The GOP?

To The Reader’s Forum: This article is written with sadness. For many of my ancestors supported the Republican Party ever since the days of Lincoln. What has happened to the GOP? We need a strong conservative party and a strong liberal party! Both parties should present their views forcibly, with civility and transparency. Everyone should be willing to work together. A turning point has been reached! Recently the Republican National Committee described the January 6th attack on our nation’s Capital Building as “legitimate political discourse.” Absurd poppycock! The ...

COVID Is A Medical Issue, Not A Political One

To The Reader’s Forum: I sure wish I could understand some people’s refusal to get vaccinated against the Covid-19 virus. None of the rationale for refusal stands up to any scrutiny. Regardless of where Covid originated, the world is affected, thus it’s called a pandemic. It’s a medical issue, not a political one. Therefore, if you refuse a proven vaccine, and/or masks for political reasons you apparently don’t understand a pandemic at all. There are only a few ways to medically deal with a pandemic caused by an airborne virus - masks, vaccines, treatments and distancing, ...

Garbage Collection Must Factor In Seniors’ Needs

According to the 2021 census by the United States Census Bureau about 20% of the City of Jamestown’s residents were 65 years of age and older. Many of them women and many single women. Our total population, reported by the Bureau, was around 19,800 residents. That leaves us with around 3,960 residents who might be considered elderly. That figure does not include the disabled under the age of 65 who may have limited mobility, nor does it represent the population over the age of 65 who are not capable of physical tasks. There has been some discussion about the recent decision by BPU ...

Don’t Call Us – And We Won’t Call You

To the Reader’s Forum: At a time when COVID-19 cases are raging in our county, the Chautauqua County Department of Health has decided to end contact tracing. On Jan. 5, the Public Health Director stated, “You no longer should expect to receive a call from us, nor do you need to call us.” With 852 cases reported last week, the Department of Health decided there are too many to keep track. Instead of trying to “just do some,” they “just won’t do any.” In other words, they are abandoning public health. They have announced what people should do if they test positive. ...

As Time Marches On, What Are We Waiting For To Change Things?

To The Reader’s Forum: Well, 2022 is upon us. What I can’t figure out is why some people say “good riddance” to the prior calendar year. To me, “good riddance” is useful only when something, or someone bad ends or changes for the better. “Time”, including calendars, is a human creation; I suppose time helps make things orderly but, in reality, time is simply a continuum. So, when poverty, inequality, war-like fighting, and ALL other negative human interaction ends or changes for the better, then it’s time to say “good riddance”. Calendar years don’t dictate ...

The Un-Evolving Gospel Of Jesus Shold Be Our Guide

To The Reader’s Forum: “Religious freedom is expanding,” said an editorial by Lindsay Lloyd (1/1). He resides not in New York where Governor Hochul arbitrarily issued an indoor public mask edict on everyone under the threat of a $ 1,000 fine. That’s freedom contraction, not expansion. His editorial cited a prominent Dallas pastor responding to the decline of Christianity and the rise of the “nones” who affiliate with no faith and the “dones” who are fininshed with the faith. The pastor said, “We all should be evolving...” “Evolving into what?” I ask. The ...
