Reader Questions Data On Tax-Exempt Status

To The Reader’s Forum:

This letter is in response to the articles appearing in The Post-Journal pertaining to the issue of the sewer treatment plant in the town of Poland.

Each time the article ran, Mayor Teresi stated 40 percent of the property in the city of Jamestown is tax-exempt. How can Jamestown, with its poverty initiative in place, have over one-third of its property claim tax exempt status?

Maybe the mayor, city development director and City Council should form a task force/committee to examine its tax-exempt criteria are met. Maybe some of that property should go back on the assessment rolls. Maybe state officials should do some investigating.

The city’s next poverty program will be to help out the property owning taxpayers.
