John H. Perry Jr.

John H. Perry Jr., 89, of Silver Creek, N.Y., passed away Monday morning at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Athens, Pa., on March 15, 1928. the son of the late John H. Sr. and Louisa (Orlowske) Perry. John was U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean conflict. He married Mary Jane Gervaise and together they raised seven children on the family farm in Sheridan, N.Y.

John worked as a steelworker for the former Allegheny Ludlum in Dunkirk, N.Y., retiring after 33 years of service. He also was the owner of Perry’s Garage in Dunkirk, a business he opened with his sons in 1984.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, he would drive around the area visiting family and friends on a regular basis. Hanging out at the garage with the boys was a very special time for him. He loved animals and always could be found tinkering with cars. In his younger years, he liked skating on Bear Lake and boating on Cassadaga Lake.

He was a former member of the Samuel Cimino Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6472 in Silver Creek, Sheridan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6390, the Stockton Volunteer Fire Company and was a current member of the World War II Veterans Club in Dunkirk.

Survivors include three daughters: Susan Lisa, Sharon Hogg and Sonia (Floyd Salzman) Pearl, all of Silver Creek; two sons: Charles (Judi) Perry and Grant (Karen Zierk) of Dunkirk, N.Y.; a brother, Gerald Perry of Dewittville, N.Y.; two sisters: Doris Kelly of Dunkirk and Bonnie (Ronnie) Percy of Dundee, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his loving wife of more than 60 years, Mary Jane Perry; two sons:, John H. “Butch” Perry III and Russell Perry; and two sisters: Helen Gavigan and Susan Cotton.

Friends may call at the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave., Silver Creek, N.Y., on Thursday, March 1, 2018, from 5-8 p.m., where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Leamon officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan Cemetery.
