St. Susan Center, Southern Tier Brewing Team Up For Oktobenefest
The 10th Annual Octobenefest held at Southern Tier Brewing Company to benefit St. Susan Center is scheduled for Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. Live music, food and Southern Tier beer will be available throughout the event.
St. Susan Center is inviting the community to enjoy brats, beers and a lot of fun on Tuesday for the 10th annual Oktobenefest.
The event, held at Southern Tier Brewing Company, is one of the biggest fundraisers for the soup kitchen, according to St. Susan Center Executive Director Jeff Smith.
The event will be held from 5-9 p.m. at the Southern Tier Brewing Company and will offer live music, Southern Tier beers and foods cooked and served by St. Susan Center board members and staff.
“It’s not ‘Oktober-fest,’ it’s ‘Okto-bene-fest,'” Smith said with a laugh. “Everyone says ‘Oktoberfest,’ including me the first time I saw it.”
The event has been a popular one over the years, and this one will not disappoint fans, he said. Oktobenefest used to be held on Sunday, but has been moved to Tuesday. Despite the day change, Smith said he hopes the die-hard fans and newcomers alike will turn out to support the center during the event.
Musical guests include Bill Ward, Amanda Lynn Barton, Ryan Buzzetto and others, and the menu includes bratwurst, shishkabobs, corn on the cob and pulled pork sandwiches. Smith said the event is family friendly and will include games such as corn hole.
“It’s typically a fall festival,” he said. “This is the 10 year the brewery has hosted us up there, and it’s a good time for a great cause. Every year, the recipe is good food, good music and all that wonderful, award-winning Southern Tier beer.”
Smith said special glasses made for the event sporting the Southern Tier and St. Susan Center logos will be for sale during the event. 50/50 tickets will also be for sale during the event. All proceeds from the event will benefit St. Susan Center.
“Through the end of July, we fed 70,000 people,” Smith said. “The year will probably close out at 120,000 or 125,000. I figure about 10,000 a month is pretty normal.”
Throughout the summer, St. Susan Center has participated in the Summer Lunch program through the YMCA in preparing meals and has fed over 14,000.
“The need is huge,” he said. “Statistically, it’s 1 in 6 that is food insecure.”
Smith said the event allows visitors to enjoy a night out, but also make it count towards fighting hunger.
