RHI Monofrax, Union Come To Three-Year Agreement

FALCONER – After four months of striking, RHI Monofrax employees are readying for a return to work.

According to a union official for the 266F National Conference of Firemen and Oilers, “The NCFO has ratified a three-year contract.”

On Wednesday, management and the labor union met at Jamestown Community College to discuss the contract situation. Details regarding the contract were not made available Wednesday evening, but are expected to be revealed in the near future.

Since Sept. 28, employees have stood outside the plant’s gates, citing chronic low wages, rising health care premiums and frozen pensions, among other issues. Throughout that time, management and the labor union held several meetings to work out a deal.

RHI Monofrax is the world’s largest producer of fused cast refractories for steel, glass, cement, lime and non-ferrous metals. RHI employs over 7,700 people in 32 locations with an annual capacity of 2 million metric tons and revenue of over 1.6 billion Euros. The Falconer-based plant is mostly utilized for the glass industry, but does supply other industries with material. The federal government purchases materials from RHI Monofrax to clean up nuclear waste.

The other labor union involved during the four month strike is the International Association of Machinists Local 2105 and Aerospace Workers. No word was released regarding the IAM situation.

Starting at $4.00/week.
