City Man Indicted After Injuring County Jail Staff Member

A Jamestown man who the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said injured a county jail staff member in June has been indicted by a grand jury.

Oliver D. Bookman pleaded not guilty to a count of assault — while confined in a correctional facility — when he was arraigned July 26 in Chautauqua County Court. The indictment was filed July 23.

The Sheriff’s Office on June 29 announced an assault charge against the 51-year-old Jamestown man after a staff member of the Mayville jail facility was reportedly injured. No further details have been provided regarding the incident.

Bookman has been in jail since May; his next court appearance on the indictment charge is scheduled for Aug. 25.

Recent indictments handed up include:

¯ A second-degree criminal possession of a weapon charge for 27-year-old Grant Bless. The Jamestown Police Department in May of this year reported that Bless allegedly fired a single shot “in close proximity to multiple occupied dwellings” in the area of Franklin Street.

Bless was located a short time later with the gun, which was discovered to have been stolen from a burglary, the department said at the time of his arrest.

The indictment was filed July 8, and Bless was arraigned July 21 at which time he pleaded not guilty. His next court date has been set for Aug. 25.

¯ A third-degree burglary charge for David Spunaugle. The 45-year-old was charged in late December after a pair of break-ins over two days.

In one instance, sheriff’s deputies responded to Kiantone Road and learned that Spunaugle had allegedly been removing items from a residence. A day later, a vehicle was observed parked on a lawn in the town of Kiantone, with Spunaugle exiting a residence. An investigation found that Spunaugle had allegedly removed several items.

The indictment was filed Aug. 5 and Spunaugle pleaded not guilty Aug 23 at arraignment. His next court date is Oct. 25.

¯ A second-degree burglary charge for 31-year-old Kevin Pattyson. New York state troopers responded June 20 to a Sinclairville home for a reported burglary and learned that a homeowner returned to find Pattyson in one of the bedrooms.

Pattyson was detained until troopers arrived.

The indictment was filed Aug. 5. Pattyson pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Aug. 12; a conference has been set for Sept. 15.

Other action taken recently in Chautauqua County Court:

¯ Adam Rice, 38, was indicted July 23 on two counts of second-degree strangulation and a single count of second-degree assault. He pleaded not guilty during arraignment Aug. 9 and was released. A conference has been scheduled for Sept. 20.

¯ James Morris, 39, was indicted Aug. 5 on three counts of second-degree assault. He pleaded not guilty during arraignment Aug. 23. His next court appearance has been scheduled for Oct. 25.

¯ Glen Hurrell Jr., 31, was indicted on a charge of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon Aug. 5. He was arraigned Aug. 9 at which time he pleaded not guilty. A conference is scheduled for Oct. 13.

¯ Kevin Goodemote, 64, was indicted Aug. 12 on charges of operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% and driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction in the past 10 years. Goodemote pleaded not guilty during arraignment Aug. 23, with a conference set for Sept. 27.
