Council Committee Approves Events

The city’s Public Safety Committee has approved three upcoming special events, including one that was tabled during April’s meeting because of ongoing questions regarding alcohol sales.

The River Revival event will be held on June 29 at McCrea Point Park from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., including setup and tear down. This event was previously discussed, and during the city council’s most recent work session, public safety committee chair Jeffrey Russell, R-At Large, said the questions have been answered.

“There was a question about the alcohol, who was going to be monitoring, age requirements and how that was all going to be set up,” Russell said. “They elected to remove alcohol sales.”

This event has now been voted on and passed by the committee.

The Third Thursday concert series was also approved by the committee. Concerts will be held the third Thursday of the month beginning May 16 and running through Sept 19. It will be at the Winter Garden Plaza from 4 to 10 p.m., including setup and tear down.

The city’s Memorial Day parade will be held on May 27 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“The parade kicks off at 10 and lines up near Baker Park,” Russell said. “The route has changed again this year, it’s going to be going up Prendergast to right onto Sixth Street and then left on Lakeview and straight down Lakeview.”

Russell added that the route has “flip flopped” in the past.

The committee also discussed the Dodge Durango being purchased by the police department, and Russell said the chief told him it will be funded through a grant. Concerns were brought up about Ivy Street being paved recently, with a few speeding cars and a possibility of a crosswalk at Montaque, to go across Ivy Street. There was also a discussion on unregistered vehicles in the city. Russell said there is a limit to what the DOD can do about those.
