While it’s no surprise that both Joe Biden and Donald Trump won their party’s backing in Tuesday’s primary, voters in Chautauqua County were not unanimous in their selection, with a higher percentage of registered Democrats voting for Biden than registered Republicans voting for Trump.

According to the state Board of Elections, in Chautauqua County, 87.3% of registered Democratic voters in Chautauqua County voted for Biden, 6.2% voted for Marianne Williamson and 6.3% voted for Dean Phillips.

For the GOP side, in Chautauqua County 79.2% of registered voters voted Trump, 15.9% voted for Nikki Haley, 3.7% voted for Chris Christie, and 1.2% voted for Vivek Ramaswamy.

But in terms of pure votes, Trump had more ballots cast for him than Biden. Trump received 1,529 votes in Chautauqua County, while Biden received 1,184.

New York is a “closed primary state,” meaning that only registered members of a political party can vote in primaries for that party.

Both Biden and Trump previously sealed up their respective parties’ nominations before Tuesday’s primary in New York, which may have driven down voter totals.

In neighboring Cattaraugus County, Trump had a slight edge compared to Biden, percentage wise.

Trump received 82.8% of party votes in Cattaraugus County, while Biden received 81.5%. Haley was the only other candidate of either party to reach double digits with 12%.

Across the state, 91.5% of registered Democrats voted for Biden and 82% of registered Republicans voted for Trump. That means both Biden and Trump did better statewide than they did in Chautauqua County.

For Biden, his highest primary percentage was in Delaware County with 95% of the vote, while Cattaraugus County had the lowest percentage with 81.5%.

For Trump, his highest primary percentage was in Richmond County with 93.1% of the vote, while his lowest total was in Tompkins County with 66.9%.

Statewide, there were 33 counties that had 90% or higher of the registered party voters select Biden, while Richmond was the only county that topped 90% for Trump.

According to the state Board of Elections, statewide there are 5,778,841 registered Democratic voters and 2,695,185 registered Republican voters.

In Chautauqua County, there are 28,004 registered Republican voters and 23,195 registered Democratic voters. In Cattaraugus County, there are 19,617 registered Republican voters and 12,548 registered Democrats.
