House Destroyed
Cause Sought In Fire That Displaces Occupants
Daniel Dolan said he awoke late Tuesday to yelling from a neighbor. That man, Dolan said, likely saved the lives of him and his family after a fire swept through his 43 Adams St. home in Jamestown.
“As we were coming down our stairwell, the whole front of our house was completely engulfed,” Dolan told The Post-Journal Wednesday morning as he surveyed what remained of his property. “He came into our home to get us out.”
A battalion chief with the Jamestown Fire Department said the blaze, reported shortly after 11 p.m., remains under investigation. It is believed that the fire started on a front porch before it spread to the rest of the home.
Firefighters arrived to find the Adams Street residence nearly fully engulfed by flames. No injuries were reported — Dolan, his wife and a child were able to escape — but a cat did perish in the blaze.
Crystal Surdyk, city development director, looked over the property Wednesday morning and said an emergency demolition would be required. In addition to destroying the home, a neiboring property also sustained damage to its siding.
Dolan said he owned the property for 22 years and was devastated by what happened.
“We took pride in our home,” Dolan said of seeing the damage, and later added what his plans were next, “Don’t know. Don’t have a prayer and don’t have a whim because I’m wearing (my neighbor’s clothes) right now.”
The local chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist the family.
