Ceremonies recently took place to dedicate patriot burial markers in two Kiantone cemeteries.
The markers, furnished by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation of Syracuse, honor the burials of Revolutionary War soldiers in the cemeteries. The marker program is sponsored locally through the Chautauqua County chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
The first ceremony was held in the Stillwater Cemetery, Bacon Road, Kiantone. A color guard from the Chautauqua County Joseph P. Jeffrey Crossley, chairman of the Chautauqua County SAR chapter, welcomed guests and described the marker program. Loretta Smith, a member of the Jamestown chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, gave brief biographies of the Revolutionary soldiers buried in the cemetery. The soldiers are Aaron Martin, Jasper Marsh, and “Captain ” William Stearns. Crossley is a descendant of Jasper March. Also present was Martha Stearns Karapontso, a descendant of William Stearns and a Jamestown chapter DAR member.
Robert Carlson of the Kiantone highway superintendent, was thanked for helping find graves, taking pictures of the graves and setting the marker in place.
