Audubon Scholarship Has May 1 Application Deadline

The Audubon Community Nature Center is accepting applications for the Gerald Augusto Audubon Natural Science Scholarship.

The winner will be awarded $400 after attending at least five of seven Saturday morning bird banding sessions this summer. They will learn bird banding and nest box monitoring techniques and protocols under Emily Perlock, Penn State-Dubois Instructor, and will be required to produce evidence of their learning, such as a poster, slide presentation, report or notebook.

The experience is made possible through an endowment established by the family of Gerald Augusto at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.

Applicants must be juniors in high school and, as designated by the fund, attend one of the following schools: Chautauqua Lake, Clymer, Falconer, Frewsburg, Jamestown, Maple Grove, Panama, Sherman or Southwestern. The application deadline is Wednesday, May 1. More information and application forms are online at AudubonCNC.org/scholarships. Applications can also be obtained by calling 569-2345 or emailing shatfield@auduboncnc.org. They can be submitted by mail or email.

The public is invited to observe the bird bandings that Audubon schedules throughout the spring and summer, beginning Saturday, April 27. For the details, go to AudubonCNC.org/Programs and click “Current Schedule.”

The Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown and Warren. The three-story Nature Center building contains interactive displays, a collection of live animals, and the Blue Heron Gift Shop. Building hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The 600-acre wetland preserve with more than five miles of trails and Liberty, the non-releasable Bald Eagle, can be visited from dawn until dusk daily.
