Beta Sigma Phi Meet For Program On Flu, Medicine
The Theta Beta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority met at the home of Joyce Anderson.
Co-hostesses for the evening were Sandy Zenns and Tracie Smith. Mrs. Anderson presented her program “Medicine — The Flu.” She explained that the flu is a contagious influenza virus with the symptoms of fever; sore throat; cough; headache; chills and body aches. To protect from getting the flu, get a flu shot even though the vaccine is only 25 percent effective for the dominant type H3N2. If a person catches the flu, the prescription Tamiflu can shorten the duration of the flu but must be taken within one or two days after the first symptoms to be effective. To lessen the chance of catching the flu, get a flu shot; cover the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing; wash the hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; and disinfect surfaces in the home, school, and workplace. According to health officials, the flu season is now on a decline.
Anderson then had members make St. Patrick’s Day pins to wear March 17 marking an Irish tradition. While members were creating their pins, Ms. Anderson read tales from “Irish Folk and Fairy Tales” by W.B. Yeats.
Following the program, Nancy Palmer presided at the business meeting. The Social Committee discussed Founder’s Day in April. Correspondent to International, Rose VanVolkenburg, received information that explained the term “Extreme Makeover.” Members will now participate in the various rituals to progress to higher Ritual Degrees.
Concluding the meeting, refreshments were served with Mrs. Sands winning the white elephant.
Recently Theta Beta members and spouses participated in a traveling dinner. They traveled to three homes: the first course was appetizers at Nancy Palmer’s home; the second course was entrees at Tracie Smith’s home; and the final course was desserts at Sandy Zenns’ home.
