If You Support Racist Sayings, You’re Racist

To the Reader’s Forum: Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that his children and all of America would measure the quality of a person by the content of their character instead of the color of their skin or their religion. Today we are witnessing a President who feels that the color of one’s skin and one’s religious affiliation are more important than the conduct of their character. What is equally worse is that we have a political party who refuses to measure the conduct and character of the President out of fear that they may not get reelected. The transitive property of ...

Welfare Is Completely Out Of Control

To the Reader’s Forum: Censoring information is what Kwai Chang Caine lamented on the 1970s TV series Kung Fu, starring David Carrradine. The character Master Po with the shimmering blind eyes stated, “To suppress a truth is to give it power beyond endurance.” The 2020 election is about one thing and one thing only. To wit: Is everyone in the third world entitled to illegally or legally come to America and receive welfare, food stamps and Medicaid at taxpayer expense. If you believe yes, vote Democrat. If you believe no, vote Republican. A few short years ago there were ...

A Plea To Policy Makers To Have Compassion

To The Reader’s Forum: To ignore the plight of animals — domestic and captive wild — in the “entertainment” industry, those caught in cruel leg-hold traps or snares, those raised for food or their pelts under deplorable and inhumane conditions, those used in painful laboratory experiments, those given away at fairs and carnivals only to be callously discarded once the novelty wears off - and to focus on the declawing of cats performed by trained veterinarians under anesthesia — just doesn’t make any kind of sense. How can we call ourselves a civilized society while we ...

In Response To ‘Backing Trump’ Vs. 50 Years Ago

To The Reader’s Forum: As a Jamestown native, ‘coming home’ for the JHS Class of 1969 50th reunion is quite a joy. Day one was filled with rich memories while roaming the maple and oak-lined, brick-clad hills of our old Westside neighborhood. The familiar high pitched rumble of tires over the bricks triggered images of the freedoms we had playing outside, kickball and sledding (safely) in the streets. We were left to our own devices for creating entertainment. This meant heaps of physical activity. No screens from which to withdraw. We made our rules of play and ...

Reader Thankful For Community Support

To The Reader’s Forum: I am writing to express my thanks to the community of Westfield for their support of the 3rd annual Bereda Memorial Run/Walk. This event is held in memory of my two grandchildren, Brennen and Finley Bereda. Proceeds from the race are being used to create a children’s interactive garden at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown. This year’s race was held on a beautiful Saturday morning during alumni weekend in Westfield. On behalf of my family I would like to thank all those who participated in either the 5k run, the 1-mile ...

Reader Has Hypothesis About President Trump

To The Reader’s Forum: My hypothesis is Donald Trump is probably a racist. Here’s my arguments. First, and foremost, I have yet to hear Trump tell a White, native born or naturalized American to go back to where they came from. There are numerous Whites, me included, who strongly oppose him personally (and his views and policies). Note that three of the four female Congresspersons “of color” included in Trump’s recent controversial tweet are native born. Thus, the only reason to use that language is because of the color of their skin and the false association that ...
