Benefit To Aid Warren County Family After Crash

Members of a Warren family continue to recover from a devastating crash last May. To help off-set lost income and for ongoing medical costs, a local church is putting together a spaghetti benefit dinner to be held this Saturday.

“I can’t say that any of us are back to normal,” said Danny Potter, who suffered a serious concussion in the crash that occurred at the intersection of Market Street and Jackson Run Road. His daughter, Libby, suffered a traumatic brain injury and lingering questions over her long-term health.

“The energy in the home is different,” he continued. “None of us are back to 100% yet, but we’re grateful for the improvements.”

Hessel Valley Lutheran Church, 166 Hessel Valley Road, Chandlers Valley, is planning a drive-through fundraiser from 3-6 p.m. Saturday. Spaghetti dinners will be sold from the bottom of the church driveway, and all proceeds will go to the Potter family.

“While money is not the most important thing in this case, this accident has had a big impact on this family’s finances,” the church said in a poster advertising Saturday’s fundraiser.

“Dad has used up leave at work, but several of his other jobs are self-employed and he’s lost a lot of income from missed time and there will be many follow-up visits to Buffalo to pay for, and we won’t know the full extent if the damage for months or even years.”

Danny Potter said he was recently able to return to work, though the sight of on-coming trucks does make him tense up while driving. He was operating the family’s van the morning of May 28 when a truck turned into his path.

After the crash, Libby was transported by helicopter to Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo. After surgery, she spent several days in the intensive care unit.

Danny’s wife, Sara, recently flew down to Georgia to pick up the family’s new vehicle. Danny said insurance only covered so much for their van, which was totaled in the crash, and the family has struggled financially to make ends meet during their recovery.

In addition to the financial implications, the crash has set back other plans as well. Danny said he has been studying for licensure for his mental health counseling job. Lingering effects from his concussion leaves him exhausted at the end of the day.

“I come home and I’m mentally zapped,” he said.

He and Sara also worry about Libby’s long-term health and for problems that may not be present at the moment.

Those unable to attend the fundraiser but would like to donate can make a check payable to Hessel Valley Lutheran Church, 166 Hessel Valley Road, Chandlers Valley, PA 16312
