FREWSBURG — With three outs to go, things didn’t look good for the Clymer/Sherman softball team Wednesday evening.

Twelve batters and seven runs later, the Wolves were in the driver’s seat on the way to their first win of the season.

Clymer/Sherman strung together four hits and took advantage of two errors and two walks in its final trip to the plate en route to an 11-6 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West victory over Frewsburg at the Robert H. Jackson Sports Complex.

“It’s our second game of the year, so at least we got the bats going today,” Clymer/Sherman head coach Dave Bodamer said. “It’d be great to have that in the first two innings to start and maybe carry through, but we still got them.”

Lily Martin led the Wolves (1-1, 1-1) with three hits, including a double and a home run, while driving in three runs and scoring three times.

“Lily was kind of our saving grace on offense today,” Bodamer said. “In the cages, we’ve seen that from her, so it’s not really surprising, but it’s great timing on her part.”

For the Bears (2-2, 1-2), it was the second straight day that they held a lead entering the seventh inning, only to see it slip away.

“In the last two games, it was one inning that hurt us and cost us the game,” Frewsburg head coach Sandy Ruhlman said. “Once we can take a little time to fix some of those things, we’ll see a different outcome.”

Frewsburg took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Taytum Jimerson reached on an error, stole second and scored on an error to tie the game. Addison Hultberg, who reached on that error and ended up at second, scored on a pair of wild pitches.

But the Wolves didn’t go away. No. 8 hitter Caylee Pinzok opened the top of the seventh with a walk and stole second before Natalie White also walked. Leadoff hitter Janelle Burchanowski reached on an infield single and Taylor Pinzok tied the game with an RBI fielder’s choice.

Martin then hit a two-run double to left-center field to give Clymer/Sherman the lead for good.

Kelsey Wagner continued the inning with an RBI double and after a wild pitch, Elli Bodamer made it 9-5 with an RBI squeeze bunt. Finally, with two outs, the Wolves’ final two runs scored on the Bears’ seventh error of the night.

“It can be a frustrating game. It’s something where, unfortunately, we haven’t had a ton of time outside to really practice fielding,” Ruhlman said. “I feel like we’re on the cusp of winning and putting it together.”

Frewsburg took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Mackenzie Martin reached on an error and Corinne McLaughlin singled with one out before a passed ball moved the runners to second and third. A wild pitch scored Mackenzie Martin with the first run of the game and Skylar Waid hit a two-out RBI single.

Lily Martin put Clymer/Sherman on the board in the top of the fourth when she broke up a no-hit bid with a long home run over the right-field fence.

Mackenzie Martin gave the Bears their two-run lead back in the bottom of the fourth when her RBI bunt single scored Jimerson.

“We’ve actually been able to work on bunting a lot inside. … I’ve been happy in all of the games that we’ve asked the kids to bunt that we’ve been able to lay it down,” Ruhlman said. ” … I feel like we can squeeze out a run here and there because of our baserunning and our aggression.”

Taylor Pinzok walked, Lily Martin singled and Wagner hit an RBI single in the top of the sixth to make it 3-2 before Martin scored on an error on the same play. Olivia Maleski then gave the Wolves a 4-3 lead with an RBI groundout to plate Wagner.

Frewsburg will continue league play Friday at Panama and Clymer/Sherman will host Cassadaga Valley that same day in Clymer.

“If we can get our offense going and we cut down on some errors, I think we can compete with anybody around,” Coach Bodamer said. “There’s a long way to go. We have work to do, for sure.”

NOTES: Bodamer struck out three and walked three while allowing six hits in the circle for Clymer/Sherman. … Teghan Trocki and Teagan Nazario combined to strike out five, walk four and hit a batter while allowing eight hits in the circle for Frewsburg.
