Jamestown Posts 9-4 Victory; Bears Prevail, Too

The Frewsburg baseball team opened its season with a win on Tuesday, downing Lake City, S.C. 11-1 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Jamestown Red & Green baseball team started the season about as well as it possibly could against Hampshire, West Virginia at Loris High School.

Jamestown jumped all over Hampshire early, scoring five runs in the first inning and never looking back en route to a 9-4 victory.

A couple runs were scored on errors and passed balls, but it was Chase Bonta hitting a three-run home run that highlighted the inning. Jamestown added two more runs in the second and a run in both the sixth and seventh inning.

Caleb Piazza led the Red & Green offense with four hits, including two doubles, and Dom Weber collected two hits with a double and three runs scored.

Antonie Rodriguez secured the win on the mound, pitching three innings and striking out four. Owen Glover finished the game for the Red & Green and walked just one batter in his four innings of work.

Casssadaga Valley was no-hit by Carmel Christian Academy of Charlotte, N.C. 11-0.

Jamestown is back in action today against Mann, West Virginia at North Myrtle Beach High School.

FREWSBURG WINS

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Frewsburg baseball team began the season with a walk-off, but the Bears were never in any danger of losing the game.

In the bottom of the sixth inning against Lake City, South Carolina, Aidan Gruber decided to end the game early when he drilled a solo home run to trigger the mercy rule for the Bears’ 11-1 victory at Myrtle Beach High School on Tuesday.

The solo shot was Gruber’s second RBI of the game and he finished 2 for 3, while Harrison Eckert went 1 for 3 with a booming two-RBI double off the wall, Maddox Sheesly went 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored, Mason Eckman had an RBI and scored a run, and both Chase Haglund and Garrett Brink scored twice.

Frewsburg provided plenty of run support in the first two innings, scoring four and then two to go up 6-0, but Haglund did not need much help on the mound. The junior pitcher hurled three hitless innings in which he struck out seven batters and walked just one in securing the win.

Vincent Sanfilippo was nearly as dominant in relief, throwing the last three scoreless innings, surrendering two hits while striking out six.

Frewsburg is back in action today at 4:30 p.m.

DUNKIRK FALLS 6-5

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Dunkirk baseball fell behind early on Tuesday, but despite battling back to a tie, was unable to claim the lead and lost to North Moore 6-5.

The Marauders trailed 4-0 after two innings of action and then began to claw back into the game.

Dunkirk first got on the board in the third inning when Gabe Valentine reached the bases being hit by a pitch, he stole second and was sacrificed to third before scoring on a fielder’s choice by Paul Trippy.

Dunkirk added two more runs when Henry Leone walked and Jon Ganey reached from another hit by pitch. Leone scored when Dylan Bankoski knocked him home with a single and then pinch runner Greg Orcutt finished Ganey’s work by scoring on an error made by the North Moore shortstop.

The Marauders tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning when Donnie Jackson hit a two-run homer that scored him and Trippy. North Moore added another run, but Dunkirk was unable to add anything after the Jackson home run.

Dunkirk put the tying run on second in the seventh inning, but both batters were retired by strikeouts, dropping the contest 6-5.

“We need to execute,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda stated. “So far we have been in every game and the little things in each game, if executed properly, would have given us three wins. Instead we are 1-2.”

Dunkirk’s offense was led by Josh Lemanski and Jackson both collecting two RBIs.

Bankoski started the game on the hill, throwing the first 2 2/3 innings with one strikeout and gave up five runs. Anthony Cosme came in relief and pitched three strong innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

Dunkirk’s final bit of action will take place on Friday in a doubleheader against Xaverian Varsity Clippers.
