FREWSBURG — As has been the case all season, Gavin Smith was in the right place at the right time Tuesday night.
For it was his 3-pointer in the fourth quarter in front of the home fans on Senior Night that not only helped Frewsburg down Falconer 60-46 in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East basketball game, but it also broke the school’s all-time boys scoring record.
“He does all the little things outside the season to get to a skill level that it takes to break scoring records,” Frewsburg coach Rob Collver said. “He’s a natural scorer. He finds a way to get to spots, he’s done a great job of generating contact, he can knock down 3s and mid-range (shots) and he gets out in transition.”
Against the Golden Falcons, Smith finished with 25 points, which pushed him past previous record holder Brad Nelson. He also pulled down nine rebounds and made four steals.
“It’s his hard work in the offseason,” Collver said of Smith. “He does all the extra things that it takes to get to that level, along with playing multiple sports.”
