Chautauqua Lake 8th-Grader Is Lone Podium Finisher Among 11 Local Girls

SYRACUSE — A fourth-place showing was the top finish by 11 local girls competing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Wrestling Invitational on Friday at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena and Events Center.

Chautauqua Lake eighth-grader Noli Paddock turned in the podium finish wrestling at 126 pounds.

Paddock opened her day with a pin of Section III Fulton senior Reese Niver in 58 seconds. She then advanced with a 10-5 decision over Section XI John Glenn junior Taylor Aiello. In the semifinals, Paddock lost an 11-5 decision to Section II Tamarac senior Ragan Retell. In the wrestlebacks, Paddock earned a 16-0 technical fall over Section V Canandaigua freshman Josie Lamb before losing the third-place match 10-0 to Aiello to finish fourth.

Two Fredonia wrestlers won their first matches of the day before failing to find the podium.

At 120 pounds, Hillbillies seventh-grader McKella Hodkin earned an 8-0 major decision over Section VII Northern Adirondack sophomore Kelsey Trowbridge, then was pinned in 1:38 by Section IX Pine Bush senior Brooke Tarshis.

Hodkin then picked up a 9-5 decision over Section II Niskayuna/Schenectady freshman Amy Erickson before dropping a 12-2 major decision to Section III Lowville Academy eighth-grader Payten Tuttle.

At 94 pounds, Hillbillies senior Meyah Aponte pinned Section IV Horseheads eighth-grader Sonya Dordoni in 56 seconds, then lost a 14-2 major decision to Section III General Brown freshman Fern Jewett. Aponte then lost a 5-0 decision to Section II Salem/Cambridge junior Madeline Palulis.

A pair of Chautauqua Lake wrestlers started the day 1-1 before losing their third match.

At 138 pounds, Eagles junior Gabriella Testa was pinned in 1:54 by Section III Phoenix senior America Figueras, then pinned Section III Lowville Academy freshman Kaibree Gaba in 50 seconds. Testa’s day ended with a pin in 4:42 to Section II Maple Hill freshman Aiyana Santana.

At 185 pounds, Eagles junior Kristina Dickey lost a 6-1 decision to Section IV Vestal junior Kiera Devantier, then earned a 14-0 major decision over Section III Fulton freshman Rhyan Pitcher. Dickey’s day ended with a pin in 4:48 to Union Endicott sophomore Cadence Trinidad.

The other six local wrestlers went 0-2 in their respective weight classes.

Dunkirk sophomore Sheila Vega was pinned in 45 seconds by Section III General Brown freshman Fern Jewett and then was pinned in 1:52 by Section IV Horseheads eighth-grader Sonya Dordoni at 94 pounds.

At 107 pounds, Fredonia sophomore Leah Waite was pinned by Section VIII Jericho senior Ava Zucker in 3:07 and then was pinned by Section IX Minisink Valley sophomore Keira Filip in 3:40.

Chautauqua Lake junior Mia Smith was pinned by Section IX Minisink Valley sophomore Jaida Macaluso in 3:42, then lost a 7-4 decision to Section II Coxsackie-Athens sophomore Jasa Cruz at 132 pounds.

At 145 pounds, Fredonia senior Lyn Cuthbert was pinned in 49 seconds by Section XI Rocky Point freshman Madison Hernandez, then was pinned in 2:05 by Section III Homer freshman Molly Sorenson.

Also at 145 pounds, Chautauqua Lake senior Sophia Gervasio lost a 17-0 technical fall to Section III Sherburne-Earlville senior Selina Moore, then lost a 1-0 decision to Section IV Johnson City senior Sophia Colgan.

Gowanda freshman Kiernon Quinn lost a 15-3 major decision to Section IX Liberty senior Zoe Kip, then was pinned in 3:41 by Section IV Waverly sophomore Elona Holmes at 152 pounds.

The Dual Meet Championships will take over the arena this afternoon with Paddock joining her Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer teammates as the No. 5 seed out of 12 teams.
