Several Area Athletes Shine For Fredonia State At SUNYAC Championships

CORTLAND — Several local student-athletes competed for Fredonia State University in the SUNYAC Championships last weekend.
Stephen Hallberg (Jamestown/Jamestown), who won the SUNYAC men’s cross country championship last fall, won the 5,000 meters in 15:15.81 for one of the Blue Devils two individual men’s titles.
Emma Gassman (Cattaraugus/Cattaraugus-Little Valley) won the 400 meters with a time of 57.15 seconds, setting a Fredonia State freshman record and placing her on the program’s top-10 list.
Calie Hudson (Gowanda/Gowanda) finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:39.76, also finding her way into the program’s top-10 list.
Emily Cardinale (Jamestown/Jamestown) took third in the pole vault (3.05 meters) and third in the long jump (5.24 meters).

The men’s 400-meter relay team, featuring Jordan Lockett (Dunkirk/Dunkirk), Talon Rowland (Randolph/Randolph), Camp Sample and Aiden VanAmburg opened Saturday’s competition with a title in 41.74 seconds.
Lockett added a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters (22.10) and a fifth-place finish in the 100 meters (10.81).
Rowland took second in the 400 meters (48.96). Edward Jourden (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) finished sixth in the 800 meters (1:58.56). Rowland and Jourden also teamed up with VanAmburg and Sample to take second in the 1,600-meter relay (3:20.25).
The Blue Devils’ 400-meter relay team of Gassman, Cardinale, Brayton Tripi and Cara Pellechia placed third in 48.41 seconds, a new Blue Devils record.
Cortland State’s Declan Kennedy (Lakewood/Southwestern) took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.06 seconds.

A 2003 Cassadaga Valley Central School graduate has been honored for his contributions to softball in the Rochester suburb of Penfield.
Dan Watson, a coach with the Rochester Lady Lions and an assistant for the varsity squad, had a softball field named after him for his dedication to the Penfield softball community. In addition, he was instrumental in growing the program in the Penfield Little League and helped it win a state title in 2019.

Daemen University’s Gracie Conlan (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) took eighth in the women’s triple jump (10.11 meters) and 10th in the long jump (4.84 meters) at the East Coast Conference Championships last weekend at Roberts Wesleyan University.
Roberts Wesleyan University’s Solki Martin-Lacayo (Clymer/Clymer/Sherman/Panama) took seventh in the women’s 800 meters (2:22) and was also a member of the winning 1,600-meter relay team, which had a time of 4:05.70.
The Redhawks’ Juvenal Diaz-Cortes (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) placed sixth in the men’s 5,000 meters (16:32.08).

Slippery Rock University’s Leighanne Swan (Sherman/Clymer/Sherman/Panama) placed second in the women’s heptathlon at the PSAC Championships last weekend in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.
Swan finished second overall with 4,431 points, just 181 behind teammate Autumn Wyatt. Swan earned 796 points with a fourth-place finish of 15.35 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, 736 points with a second-place showing of 1.60 meters in the high jump, 501 points with an eighth-place showing of 9.57 meters in the shot put, 718 points with an eighth-place showing of 26.92 seconds in the 200 meters, 643 points with a fourth-place showing of 5.30 meters in the long jump, 357 points with an 11th-place showing of 23.66 meters in the javelin, and 680 points with a sixth-place showing of 2:31.03 in the 800 meters.
Swan’s Slippery Rock teammate Grace Lennon (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) took fourth in the 100 meters (12.22) and 21st in the 200 meters (25.66) while also running a leg of the third-place 400-meter relay team that finished in 47.42 seconds.
Edinboro’s Jada Cole (Mayville/Chautauqua Lake) finished second in the women’s high jump at a height of 1.73 meters, which was a Division II provisional score.

St. John Fisher’s Brandon Keefe (Panama/Clymer/Sherman/Panama) took fourth in the javelin throw at 43.86 meters during the Empire 8 Conference Championships last weekend in Rochester.

Jenica Jones (Ashville/Chautauqua Lake) was named to the Empire 8 Women’s Flag Football Championship All-Tournament Team last month.
A sophomore at Elmira College, Jones was selected for her performance at defensive back, highlighting a season in which she helped the Soaring Eagles make a run to the inaugural Empire 8 championship, including a semifinal upset over No. 1 Geneseo before falling to Brockport in the title game 36-31. Against Geneseo, she led Elmira with 13 tackles, including three for loss.
