Verboskys Help Dragons To Fourth Place In Class D Boys

VERONA — It was a banner day for the Maple Grove boys cross country team at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association D Championships on Saturday.
Running on the 3.1-mile course at Vernon Verona Sherrill High School, the Red Dragons — led by the Verbosky brothers — finished fourth as a team with 95 points.
Ethan Verbosky recorded the fastest time — 16:33, good for fifth place — while Sean Verbosky placed 12th in 16:51.7.
Other area runners in Class D and their finishes include: Juvenal Cortes-Diaz and Xander Pitts, both of Frewsburg, who finished 15th and 30th in 16:57.2 and 17:43.1 respectively; and Grant Cornell of Franklinville/Ellicottville, who placed 39th in 18:15.2.
Maple Grove’s other representatives were Joshua Ashbaugh (18:35.8, 55th), Jacob Lewis (19:54.5, 62nd), Tyler Anderson (19:33.6, 75th), Owen Erlandson (92nd, 20:13.4) and Nico Svetanics (20:51.3, 108th).

Section VI placed fourth in Class D with 364 points; East Aurora was the team champion with 49 points; and Van Furman of Tri-Valley was the top individual with a 15:58.3 clocking.
Meanwhile, Stephen Hallberg of Jamestown placed 52nd in the Class A race, posting a time of 17:01.6. Section VI placed eighth as a team with 675 points; Section II was the champion, finishing with 313 points; and Nolan McGinn of Fayetteville-Manlius was the top individual with a time of 15:48.7.
