Maple Grove’s Verbosky, Randolph’s Kelly Take 5th

ROCHESTER — A number of boys from the Southern Tier turned in fine performances at the 58th annual McQuaid Invitational on Saturday.

Roan Kelly of Randolph and Ethan Verbosky of Maple Grove both placed fifth in their respective three-mile races, while Maple Grove and Southwestern earned fourth-place team finishes in their classifications to highlight the action at Genesee Valley Park.

Competing in the AA Medium Schools, Kelly posted a time of 15 minutes, 55.3 seconds, which was about 38 seconds behind winner Nathaniel Fisher of Brockport (15:17.2). Walsh Jesuit placed first among the 32 teams with 94 points.

Meanwhile, Verbosky’s 15:29 clocking was about 35 seconds in back of winner Kevin Sherry of Coudersport (14:55.3) in the A-2 Small Schools. Not far behind for the Red Dragons was Sean Verbosky, who finished 17th in 16:08.1. Other Maple Grove runners who helped secure the fourth-place finish with 270 points were Jacob Lewis, Joshua Asbaugh and Owen Erlandson.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama had the best finish among area schools in that classification, placing 12th. Lucas Dunnewold was the Wolfpack’s top finisher with a time of 16:13.9, good for 22nd place.

Frewsburg’s Xander Pitts (16:26.4) and Juvenal Diaz-Cortes (16:54.7) placed 25th and 40th respectively.

In Small Varsity A-1 Small Schools, Donavin Brown (16:20) Trey Faulk (16:22.6) led the way for Southwestern, placing 12th and 13th overall. Lukas Svenson (17:02), Sam Kautzman (17:13.1) and Kenji Walters (18:06.6) also helped secure a fourth-place team finish. Owen Rung of East Aurora was the top individual finisher, posting a time of 15:09. East Aurora also won the team event with 101 points. Southwestern had 202.

In Class AA, Jamestown placed fifth as a team with 129 points, headlined by Stephen Hallberg, who finished ninth in 16:00.6, and Maxwell Knight, who finished 11th in 16.10.6. Tyler Zwald (16:28), Owen Caswell (16:56.10) and Finn Caswell (17:07.5) also contributed. Clarence was the team winner with 93 points. Charlie Payne of Lakewood claimed the individual title with a time of 15:14.8.
