RANDOLPH — Southwestern and Randolph split the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West title a season ago.

On Thursday, the Cardinals made sure they would have this year’s crown all to themselves.

Senior Kyra Pence led four players in double figures as Randolph beat the Trojans 58-43 at Randolph High School.

“Our first goal for the season was to win the league,” Randolph head coach David Pihlblad said. “Last year we were co-league champs with them and our girls were kind of motivated to win it outright this year.”

Sophomore Payton Morrison had 13 points and nine rebounds; eighth-grader Skylar Herington had 11 points; and sophomore Quinn Pence had 11 points, six steals and five assists for the Cardinals (15-4, 10-0), who locked up the No. 1 seed in the Section VI Class C postseason with the victory.

“We have really nice balance on our team. We have four guards that can all shoot,” Pihlblad said. ” … We had four girls in double figures. That makes it really hard for teams to guard us because somebody is going to step up and hit shots.”

Junior Reece Beaver led Southwestern (14-5, 8-2) with 15 points to go along with six rebounds, while sophomore Bella Sirianni had 9 points, six assists and four rebounds.

“Kyra Pence is just an unbelievable defender. We put her on their best player every game and tell her to shut her down,” Pihlblad said when asked about the plan against Beaver. ” … Whenever they’d set screens, we had a game plan to make sure nothing was easy for Reece and our girls executed that game plan tonight.”

Junior Lauren Cotter chipped in 7 points and six rebounds, while junior Madi McIntyre had 6 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

“Lauren Cotter played an amazing game,” Southwestern head coach Kay Sirianni said. “Defensively, it was hard to even sit her on the bench for a minute. … We do need her in the playoffs.”

Playing in front of its home crowd, Randolph used a 10-1 run midway through the first quarter to take a 20-6 lead after eight minutes.

“Our girls were really ready to go. We’ve had a nice two or three weeks where we’ve gotten off to great starts,” Pihlblad said. ” … We hit some shots and played great defense to get ourselves a nice lead that we held on to the rest of the game.”

Bella Sirianni hit a pair of 3-pointers during an 11-2 Southwestern run midway through the second quarter and Beaver hit a 3-pointer with 1:44 remaining in the period as the Trojans closed to within seven at halftime.

“We started slow in that first quarter and then we picked it back up,” Coach Sirianni said.

An even third quarter allowed the Cardinals to hold on to their seven-point lead entering the fourth quarter and Southwestern was unable to claw back in the game, due in large part to nine fourth-quarter turnovers.

For the game, the Trojans turned it over 22 times, which led to 27 points for Randolph.

“Sometimes when you play a good defensive team, they create the turnovers,” Coach Sirianni said. ” … They (forced) several in that fourth quarter and they capitalized. That hurts.”

Quinn Pence hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter that pushed the Cardinals’ lead back up to 10 and Kyra Pence later hit a corner 3-pointer that made it a 12-point game. Southwestern never got closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Randolph will play its final playoff tuneup tonight with a nonleague game at Sherman, while the Trojans will visit nonleague Frewsburg on Monday afternoon.

“This is OK. We said going into this that we had nothing to lose. … This was getting us better for playoffs,” Coach Sirianni said. “We haven’t had this tough of competition in a little while. … It gives us something to work on for the next week of practice.”

NOTES: Randolph shot 21 of 57 (36.8%) from the field, including 6 of 27 (22.2%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over just six times. … Southwestern shot 16 of 50 (32%) from the field, including 6 of 24 (25%) from 3-point range. … Southwestern won the jayvee game 51-17. Juliette Genareo led the Trojans with 18 points and Charlotte Beaver had 16.
