Near the end of the fourth quarter, Trey Drake was standing at the sideline smiling.

He was taking in the earlier game experience where he broke a school record in career passing yards in a 54-0 nonleague victory over the Niagara Falls Wolverines on Friday night at Strider Field.

The senior quarterback began the game needing 175 yards to break Jake Sisson’s passing record of 4,839 yards. He ended up with 220 yards by completing 13-of-22 passes and four touchdowns. This is Drake’s fourth season as a starter, and he will head to North Dakota State University next year. Sisson played for the Red Raiders in 2012 and 2013.

“Well, Trey, for every moment that people see him throwing (a pass) in a game, there’s been hundreds of hours of him working by himself or outside of the public eye. And he’s done so much work. And he’s made a great commitment to this game because he loves it,” head coach Tom Langworthy said.

Drake would not take all of the credit for the record.

“It’s such a cool experience to have and I couldn’t be more happy to do with this group of teammates in this coaching staff. Kudos goes to them because I wouldn’t be here in this position without them. Ultimate glory goes to God,” Drake said.

It seemed like the Red Raiders were on offense for most of the game. The offense scored five TDs while the defense scored three touchdowns. The Red Raiders tried three 2-point pass conversions and failed.

The defense first scored with 9:06 left in second quarter. The Wolverines were punting near their end zone, and the rush proved to be too much as Brad Bennett got his hands on the ball. The ball was recovered in the end zone by Sean Paige. By then the Red Raiders were leading 20-0.

Jamestown’s second score also came in the second quarter with 1:54 left on the clock. Colin Melendez intercepted a pass on the Wolverines’ 24 yard line and took it in from there.

“Our defense played fantastic tonight. And just a great just a great team effort and it’s especially nice to go win like this at homecoming,” Langworthy noted.

The defense’s third score came with 3:41 remaining in the fourth quarter when Jack Carlson intercepted a pass on the Wolverines’ 22-yard line and scored. The 2-point run by Masiah Jones was good and brought the score to 54-0.

“It was just a great team effort. I’m really proud of the kids. Everybody got to play in the game,” Langworthy said.

Niagara Falls could not get its offense going. The Wolverines were 7 of 23 for 71 yards passing and threw three interceptions. Their total rushing was 26 carries for 44 yards. The total offense was only 115 yards.
