MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The distance from Dunkirk to this coastal South Carolina vacation destination is just shy of 800 miles.

For Coach Frank Jagoda’s high school baseball team, it was more than worth the nearly 13-hour drive.

The Marauders closed out their appearance in the Mingo Bay Classic Tournament on Friday by downing Camden, New York 14-5 to claim the Mike Johnson Division Championship.

Brady Corbett was named the team Most Valuable Player after batting 10-for-12, stealing two bases and playing stellar defense all week. His effort, as well as his teammates, highlighted a day in which Jagoda tied former Dunkirk coach and Chautauqua Sports Hall of Famer Al Stuhlmiller for most career victories — 360 — in school history.

Jagoda, who will have a chance to break that mark on Monday when the Marauders entertain Gowanda, wouldn’t mind getting results similar to the ones on Good Friday.

Nick Zatorski and Bryson Travis shared the pitching duties, combining for eight strikeouts, walking six and scattering seven hits. The tandem helped their own cause at the plate. Zatorski belted a three-run home run and Travis added a two-run shot. Zatorski’s blast gave the Marauders a 6-2 lead in the third inning, while back-to-back homers by Travis and Jack Lanski, who also had a double, pushed the advantage to seven runs in the fourth frame.

Dunkirk scored two runs in the second inning. Corbett walked, Javy DeJesus was hit by a pitch and, after a double steal, they crossed the plate on Scott Korzenski’s two-run single. The Marauders added four more runs in the fifth inning as Zatroski walked, stole second and, after Korzenski reached on an error, Alex Ahlstrom smacked a two-run single. Ahlstrom finished the day with two hits, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs. Lanski’s RBI single closed out the scoring in the fifth.

Jagoda, a decorated pitcher for Stuhlmiller from 1977-79, will have a chance to break his coach’s career win record on Monday when Dunkirk entertains Gowanda.

Stuhlmiller coached baseball at Dunkirk from 1955 to1983. During that time, he compiled a 360-144 mark, won 15 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association titles, 10 sectional crowns and two supersectional championships.
