Fredonia Girls Set Up Date With Southwestern
ALDEN — Fredonia went on the road looking for an upset Tuesday evening.
It took a pair of career highs for the Hillbillies to pull it off.
Sophomore Ella Koopman scored a career-high 13 points to go along with five steals and fellow sophomore Francesca Pucci added a career-best 12 points, five rebounds and four steals as No. 11 Fredonia beat No. 6 Alden 33-23 in a Class B2 prequarterfinal.
Up next for the Hillbillies is a Friday quarterfinal date with No. 3 Southwestern, a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West foe that beat Fredonia by a combined 56 points in two meetings this season.
Alden leading-scorer Jenna Kersten finished with 13 points, including 5-of-14 shooting at the free throw line.
“We played mostly man-to-man on Kersten with Pucci,” Fredonia head coach Dan Vona said. “Pucci has worked her way into the starting lineup. Her defense is pretty tenacious and she’s pretty gritty. I’ll play anybody who gives their heart to the game.”
Fredonia trailed 13-10 at halftime, but took control with a 15-4 third quarter. Ashlynn Delcamp had 6 of her 8 points in the quarter while Koopman added 5 and Pucci had 4.
“Ella Koopman really stepped up. She gave 100% from the start. A couple of other players amped up their intensity in the third and fourth quarters,” Vona said. “If we give our heart like we did the last two quarters of this game, we can do really well. I’m just proud of the girls, they did a great job. It’s a long season. We’re in the playoffs and it’s a different a feel.”
Delcamp had six rebounds and three assists; Abigail Wray grabbed five rebounds and Alana Holt had four rebounds.
