Closure Of Bush Industries Hits Very Hard

More than 200 people woke up Thursday to find their services were no longer needed at Bush Industries.

It’s a gut punch to longtime employees, some of whom have worked decades for the Jamestown manufacturer, and for those who thought they had shepherded Bush through lean years in the 2010s prior to the company’s purchase that led to the formation of the eSolutions Furniture Group in 2020. For decades Bush Industries had been one of the south county’s major employers and, despite prior tough times, had always found a way to bounce back.

Post-pandemic business has been tough, unfortunately. Competition from off-shore competitors combined with already decreasing demand for Bush’s products and then the imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods came together to form a perfect storm that sank a familiar Jamestown brand.

There is no one to blame. It would be easy to say New York’s notoriously unfriendly business climate was the culprit, but the fact is the closure affects plants in different states and in Canada. Company officials took what they felt was the right move back in 2020 by partnering with like-minded companies in an effort to market themselves as an e-commerce brand. Some will say the county should have done more to help, but sources told The Post-Journal on Thursday that the IDA offered every type of assistance it could offer over a period of six months. There was nothing the county could offer that would place Bush Industries on solid financial ground.

In the end, nothing except a deep-pocketed owner could have saved Bush Industries, and even then the long-term future was hazy at best.

There is a human element that we all feel when a longstanding and major member of the business community closes its doors. Hard-working friends and neighbors just lost their livelihood, and there aren’t always many similar companies hiring. Many of us know someone who worked at Bush during its history. Many of us have Bush furniture in our homes or studied at a Bush Industries desk while we were in school. Many fondly remember trips to the company’s outlet store. Paul Bush, the founder of Bush Industries, left an enduring positive legacy on the community. Bush Industries was only a part of Paul Bush’s mark on Chautauqua County, but we’re losing a namesake company of a longtime pillar of the community – and that stings our collective memory.

Thursday was a tough day for many in the Jamestown area. Employees will get over the shock and find a way through this difficult time. Hopefully, Bush Industries’ building finds a new and productive use soon. And hopefully we don’t have to feel this collective gut punch again anytime soon.

Starting at $3.50/week.
