Gotowka Tosses Another Gem

DUNKIRK — Ashley Gotowka and the rest of the Dunkirk softball team was supposed to play Southwestern on the road in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West game Wednesday afternoon, but foul weather in West Ellicott prevented that from happening.

No problem, though.

Gotowka and company felt perfectly comfortable when the game was switched to their home field.

The right-hander gave up a first-pitch, first-inning single to Teagan Shedd, but was otherwise unhittable as she finished with a one-hitter, 15 strikeouts and no walks in a 4-1 victory over the Trojans.

Dunkirk (9-3, 7-2) scored all four runs in the top of the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Courtney Zatorski.

The Trojans received a fine pitching effort from Katie Lowe — three-hitter, nine strikeouts and no walks — but they could only manage a single run off Gotowaka, which came in the bottom of the seventh.

Emily Pacheco had the only other hit for the Marauders, a seventh-inning double.

T’BIRDS EDGE WESTFIELD

WESTFIELD — Chautauqua Lake (7-0) held on for a 7-6 win over Westfield (8-1), handing the Wolverines their first loss of the year.

Olivia Herrington led Chautauqua Lake in the circle with 14 strikeouts and three walks while giving up five hits, two to Sydney Hotchkiss.

The Thunderbirds picked up the win despite a huge day at the plate from Haileigh Dellow. The senior captain had a grand slam in the second inning after homering in the first, while also pitching all seven innings with 11 strikeouts and five walks and no earned runs as the Wolverines committed eight errors.

The Thunderbirds scored four runs in a decisive fifth inning, with Hannah Bretz smacking a triple.

HARVEY SHINES FOR PANAMA

SINCLAIRVILLE — Panama (5-3) was a 7-0 winner over Cassadaga Valley (0-9) in CCAA West Division softball action.

Ashlyn Harvey threw five innings for the Panthers before the game was called on account of weather, striking out 12 batters along the way.

Aystyn Barrett had five strikeouts in the circle for the Cougars.

Harvey added two singles and a triple at the plate, Kylie Morgan was 3 for 3, Sarah Harvey was 2 for 3 and Corinne Hovey had a double.
