Five In A Row

Jackals Continue To Play Well With Gray At The Helm

Leventrice Gray was working in a hospital in Alabama when he received a phone call a couple months ago from Kayla Crosby, the general manager of the Jamestown Jackals. The gist of the conversation was to gauge his interest in returning to Western New York to coach the franchise he had once played for a couple years ago.

Initially, Gray was happy to stay put in the south.

Fast-forward to a couple weeks ago.

Crosby called again.

This time, Gray decided to head north.

The reunion has worked out just fine so far.

Sunday was the most recent example.

Matthew Hart scored 31 points and Bernard Edwards added 23 to lead the Jackals to a 126-101 victory over Albany in action from The Basketball League at the Physical Education Complex at Jamestown Community College.

The win was Jamestown’s fifth in a row and it’s fourth straight with Gray at the helm, raising the Jackals’ record to 6-2. Albany, meanwhile, fell to 4-2.

The difference was the third quarter when the hosts outscored the Patroons, 45-22, transforming a close game — Albany led 51-49 at the break — into a runaway. The difference makers during that run were Edwards, Hart and Akoy Agau. Together, the trio combined for 33 points — 17 by Edwards — to help put the Jackals in front, 94-73, heading into the final period.

Hart and Edwards were especially impressive, combining to shoot 16 of 29 from the field, including 9 of 18 from distance and 13 of 16 from the free throw line.

“Their work ethic is ridiculous,” Gray said of Hart and Edwards. “They are very unselfish. When they’re on the court, nothing but good things are going to happen. They play well together, play well off the ball. They do great things.”

The rest of the Jackals are following their lead.

“(Crosby) did a great job recruiting the guys,” Gray said. “When I got here for the first practice, I was blown away. I don’t know if they understand their own potential, but I see it and I’m going to try my best to get it out of them.”

So far, so good.

“The transition to here is easy,” Gray said. “Alabama and Jamestown are kind of similar. The climates are different, but Jamestown always gives me the home feel. It’s only right.”

NOTES: Other double-figure scorers for Jamestown were Raheem “Radio” Singleton with 15 points, Agau with 14, Aaron Shepard with 13 and Drew Cushingberry with 10. … Brent Schuck led the Patroons with 22 points, Shadell Millinghaus had 19, Anthony Allen added 14, and Deon Lyle chipped in with 10. … The Jackals shot a blistering 16 of 35 from the arc compared to 12 of 36 for Albany. … The Jackals return to action at 7 p.m. Friday when they entertain the Lewisville (Texas) Yellow Jackets) at the Physical Education Complex. They travel to Owensboro, Kentucky for a 3 p.m. tip-off on Sunday.
