Auer, Crist, Ruiz, Brown Claim CCAA Top Honors

The Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association released its all-star selections recently, with Maple Grove earning a pair of Small-School top honors.

Peter Auer has been named the boys Runner of the Year while teammate Ava Crist has earned girls Runner of the Year honors.

Auer led the Red Dragons to a second-place team finish at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Sunken Meadow State Park, taking sixth place in Class D with a 17:36.1.

Crist also aided the girls team to a second-place team finish, clocking a 20:17.1 to finish in 12th overall.

At the Section VI Championships in Bemus Point, Auer took first place while Crist claimed an individual CCAA championship title on Oct. 26.

Ava Crist was named the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Small School girls Runner of the Year.

Anthony Ruiz of Dunkirk and Emily Brown of Fredonia have earned Runner-of-the Year Large School honors.

Brown finished in 17th place in Class C at the NYSPHSAA Championships with a 20:24.5 while Rey grabbed fourth at the Section VI Class C Championships with a 17:21.34.

The All-Western New York Cross Country teams were also recently released, with both Auer and Randolph’s Ronan McDonald earning First Team appointments.

McDonald led all local runners at the NYSPHSAA Championships, finishing fifth in the Class D race with a 17:11.4.

Jamestown’s Mason McVinney has been named the top 8th-grade runner while Roan Kelly of Randolph has been named the top 7th-grader.

McVinney finished in 73rd place at the Class A Section VI Championships in 20:20.36 while Kelly took 22nd in the Class D race with a 20:01.67.

Diego Rey of Dunkirk has received an Honorable Mention designation after finishing in 18th place in the Class C state championships race with a 17:29.7.

Kylee Odell of Clymer/Sherman/Panama has been named the top junior and Christina Peppy the top sophomore.

Odell took seventh in the Class D state championships with a 19:57.1 while Peppy was just a step behind in seventh with a 19:57.1.

Brown and Crist join Odell and Peppy on the First Team.

Local honorable-mention choices include Acacia Barber of Frewsburg and Abby Brunenavs of Maple Grove.

Brunenavs took 16th overall in the Class D state championship race with a 20:38.2 while Barber took 34th overall in 21:41.6.
