Fredonia’s Gens Breezes To Wins In Singles Play

LAKEWOOD — The top four tennis singles players in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association have been determined after the first day of tournament play Wednesday at the Lakewood YMCA.

Bernadette Gens of Fredonia barely broke a sweat.

The talented sophomore from Fredonia didn’t lose a game in knocking off Lauren Allen of Falconer and Maggie Waugh of Olean by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores to advance to Friday’s semifinal round.

Also moving on are Chautauqua Lake’s Emily Bauer, Jamestown’s CeCe Eklum and Fredonia’s Alicia Kluck.

Bauer defeated Dunkirk’s Hannah Saye, 6-0, 6-1, and Dunkirk’s Isabella Surma, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; Eklum held off Dunkirk’s Gabi Loeb, 7-5, 6-4, and Olean’s Mackenzie Windus, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3; and Kluck knocked off Olean’s Caroline DeRose, 6-2, 6-0, and Southwestern’s Hiba Munir, 6-1, 6-4.

The tournament continues today at 11 a.m. with doubles play, and will conclude on Friday with the semifinals and finals in both singles and doubles.
