JPD Chief: Vacancies Caused By Interest, Not JPD’s Effort

In response to Opinion article published February 11th 2023 “Jamestown Has To Think Outside The Box To Fill Vacancies in Police Department” I would like to provide some updates and facts in regards to filling police officer vacancies within the Jamestown Police Department. For one, an area that has not been mentioned by Mr. Champ, nor the article, is the fact that newly selected officers must be hired off an existing civil service list. The current list was released in December of 2022. Once the list is certified, the candidates must pass additional standards such as the physical ...

End State’s Fast Tracking Of Industrial Solar, Wind Projects

To The Reader’s Forum: It is not clean energy! They are not wind farms or solar farms! They are industrial wind factories! Industrial solar factories! They destroy the field and forests of real farms. They destroy our rural communities, they destroy our quality of life and expose the grid to base load failures. Wind and solar increase our energy costs and the cost of all commodities. There are predictions of a quadrupling of energy costs and brown outs and black outs due to unreliable “renewables.” The grid is constrained by bottlenecks, in need of repair — presently ...

Shooting By 6-Year-ls A Simple Issue

To The Reader’s Forum: The Jan. 19 P-J ran an AP article titled, “Shooting By 6-Year-Old Raises Complex Cultural Questions”. I disagree - the issue of the shooting is rather simple. The basic facts are: parents bought a handgun; parents permitted the child access to the handgun at home; the child brought the gun to school: the child shot a teacher. My analysis is that the parents were negligent and should be held accountable, that is, charges filed against them and removal of guns from their possession. It’s really a simple issue. The child, the teacher and, perhaps, society ...

County Should Pursue Airport Marketing Study

To The Reader’s Forum: I am encouraged that the county is talking about a marketing study regarding air service at the Jamestown airport. For years, the tail has wagged the dog ..... getting proposals from airlines about what they wanted to do and where they wanted to fly. It sounds like we are finally talking about asking our flying customers where they want to make connections to, and asking airlines to make proposals to our preferred destination. Then our leaders can decide whether it makes sense or not, using the proper information. Vince Joy Jamestown

Fenton History Center, Museum Is A Local Gem

To The Reader’s Forum: I hope Jamestown folks realize what precious gems you have in the Fenton Museum and History Center. In November, I visited both while staying with friends in Jamestown, where my dad and grandfather grew up. I was looking for information about my great-grandfather’s service in the Civil War, but I couldn’t recall his Army unit. Norman Carlson, Collections Manager, was just amazing. His encyclopedic knowledge of the History Center’s collection got me right to the record of my ancestor in the 49th NY Volunteer Regiment, including finding a regimental ...

GOP Leaders Should Support Hochul’s Clean Energy Plans

To The Reader’s Forum: “Area leaders applaud Hochul on mental health, not energy” (Jamestown Post-Journal, 1/11) suggests limited bipartisan cooperation is possible in Albany. What’s surprising, though, especially in light of the almost constant barrage of climate disasters faced by New York State since Hurricane Sandy, is the GOP leaders’ intransigence regarding Governor Hochul’s commitment to a clean energy economy transition. Even more surprising are the two reasons offered for opposing the Governor’s energy plans. First is the implied claim that only those who heat ...
