Make Your Thoughts Known About City Police Reform Plan

There is much to like in Jamestown’s draft Police Reform and Reinvention Plan.

The plan sets as goals to increase recruitment of minority and women candidates, achieve state accreditation, increase the amount of community relations the Jamestown Police Department undertakes, including an increase in beat patrols, and increasing mentoring programs between youth and police. Also noteworthy is the goal of making sure officers have the mental health resources they need to deal with a stressful job that not all city residents are cut out to perform.

These are all good ideas. It is important for the department to represent the community and to build trust with the population it serves.

The plan is still not finished. The community has a chance for input until 5 p.m. Friday. A public presentation of the document will take place March 22 before anticipated City Council approval March 29. Anyone with concerns about the plan — both that it goes too far or not far enough — have four days to make their feelings known.
