Llewellyn “Lew” Turnbull

Llewellyn “Lew” Turnbull, 89, of 140 Aldren Ave., formerly of 133 Valleyview Ave., Jamestown, passed away at 8:34 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019, in UPMC Chautauqua.

He was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Blossburg, Pa., the only child of the late Robert and Luella Comstock Turnbull.

Lew was a 1948 graduate of Blossburg High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa., in 1952 and his masters degree from St. Bonaventure University in 1967.

Following his graduation from college he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Midway from 1952-56 during the Korean War. After returning from his service in the U.S. Navy, he taught English at Jamestown High School for 22 years, where he was supervisor of the English department for three years and special projects director for nine years.

He was a member of the Samuel Derby Post 556, American Legion in Frewsburg, N.Y. and the New York State Teachers Association.

He will be remembered as one who loved books, reading and spending the winter months with his wife, Ilona in Pawley’s Island, S.C. He loved socializing with his friends and the Wednesday breakfasts with his best friends: Roger Gilbert and Joe Chimera.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Ilona M. Argentieri Turnbull, whom he married Aug.16, 1958; a son, David (Laura) Turnbull of Jamestown; and his precious granddaughter, Mia Turnbull, whom he loved dearly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood, N.Y. The Rev. Piotr Zaczynski, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will not be observed. Instead Lew asks that you visit a friend or someone that needs help in some way.
