James N. “Jim” Kennedy

James N. “Jim” Kennedy, 92, of Broadhead Avenue in Jamestown, passed away early Monday morning, Sept. 16, 2019 at UPMC Chautauqua.

He was the husband of Martha Hanson Kennedy, whom he married Sept. 5, 1959.

Jim was born Aug. 25, 1927, in Jamestown, and was the son of the late Neil and Mary Callahan Kennedy. He attended college in both Florida and Colorado.

A highly decorated veteran, he first served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-46. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1949, serving in the 8th Army Ranger Company (Airborne) until 1953 during the Korean War. Jim was the recipient of two Bronze Stars with V device, a Silver Star with cluster and a Purple Heart with four Bronze Stars.

His work history began early at his father’s business, the former New Eagle Motors in Jamestown. He was a photographer and ski patrol member in Sun Valley, Idaho, an area he enjoyed greatly as an avid skier. Moving to California where he continued his photography, Jim was also an active participant in SCCA automobile racing during the 1960s. His photography continued in sports and grew into news coverage. He then moved to Colorado and covered news in the Denver area. Jim returned to Jamestown in early 1970s and photographed area news for Channel 2 News in Buffalo before eventually becoming freelance in his work.

In addition to his wife Martha, surviving are his brother-in-law and sister- in-law, Richard and Patricia Hanson of Lakewood.

Graveside Military Honors will be led by the Jamestown Vietnam Veterans Association at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Visitation will not be observed.
