Edith Morris Ward

She was born, June 21, 1920, the daughter of Albert Edward and Mary Jane (Jenkinson) Morris in the village of Parton in the Lakes District of Northwest England. Her family imigrated from England, through Halifax, Nova Scotia, then moved to Windsor, Ontario in 1928. After living in Windsor for two years, the family imigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Homestead, Pa.

Following graduation in 1938, Edith attended nursing school. She moved to Bemus Point in 1940 as a nanny to the children of the Pardee Family of Pittsburgh who summered in the village. She married Fletcher Rexford Ward of Bemus Point, on Sept. 15, 1941.

Edith was employed as attendance secretary at the Bemus Point High School and later as guidance secretary at Maple Grove Junior/Senior High School, retiring in 1983 to care for her parents. While living in Bemus Point, she was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Jamestown and later of St. George’s Episcopal Church in St. Louis Park, Minn.

Of all of her accomplishments, Edith was most proud to have raised her three children as a single mother. She helped all three successfully graduate from college, become happily married and raise their own families. Edith was grateful to her family, friends, and neighbors in Bemus Point, who were always there to help.

Edith Ward was proceeded in death by her parents; and her brother, Ernest Morris of Phoenixville, Pa. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Elaine (Bruce) Becker of Wayzata, Minn.; her son, Norman (Nan Adair) Ward of Indianapolis, Ind. and her son, Fletcher “Ned” (Rosalie) Ward of Bemus Point, N.Y.; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Edith’s family would like to thank the staff of Lutheran Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation and of Hultquist Place for their love and kindness, and for the dignity with which she was treated. Our special thanks go to her nurses and aides and staff members. The family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to Jeannie Hatheway, (Catholic Ombudsman) Peter Dawson (lay minister of St. Lukes Episcopal Church), the Rev. Daniel Rumfelt (chaplain at the Lutheran) and the men and women of Hospice.

Arrangements will be handled by the Falconer Funeral Home and internment will be at St. George’s Episcopal Church Columbarium in St. Louis Park, Minn., where a family celebration of Edith’s life will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no local calling hours or visitation.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make a contribution to their favorite charity in remembrance of Edith.
