Bomb Threat Forces Persell Evacuation

A bomb threat resulted in a student evacuation of Persell Middle School Wednesday afternoon.

District officials said in a news release that students were sent to an off-site location and remained there until the end of the school day. Parents were notified of student reunification protocols.

“On Wednesday afternoon, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and Jamestown Police Department were made aware of a bomb threat to Persell Middle School. Out of an abundance of caution, students and staff were moved to an offsite location, per our evacuation plan, to allow JPD to investigate and sweep the building. Following the investigation, the threat was determined to be unfounded and JPD has cleared the building,” said Dr. Kevin Whitaker, Jamestown Public Schools superintendent.

Jamestown Police Department K9 units cleared the building and spent part of Wednesday afternoon overseeing Persell Middle School to determine if the threat was credible. JPD later deemed the threat not credible. A track meet at the school was canceled while the middle school combined choral concert at Persell Middle School took place as scheduled.

“Students were dismissed from the offsite location at the end of the school day utilizing our reunification protocols,” Whitaker said. “Persell students and staff did a remarkable job following these procedures and we thank them, as well our families, for their patience during a challenging situation.”
