For 30 years, the Jamestown Harmony Express has hosted a free gospel and sacred music concert for the public’s enjoyment.

This year’s concert will be held April 6 at the First Presbyterian Church, 509 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown. The Harmony Express is composed of a harmony-based choir and several barbershop quartets and has a storied historical connection to the Pearl City.

“The organization has been around for 39-plus years,” said Dan Scapelitte, a retired history teacher, college professor and barbershop quartet member. “This particular concert we’ve performed for 30 years and it’s a gospel and sacred music concert.”

A barbershop quartet is defined as: a group of four male singers who sing in an old-fashioned style without instruments.

While the concert is open to a variety of different music types and styles and other choirs or quartets are encouraged to perform at the April 6 event – there is one unifying requirement.

“The only real requirement we have is that the music is of a faith-based nature,” said Scapelitte.

Scapelitte also was quick to encourage any church, band or music group wishing to perform to contact him as soon as possible to get on the agenda and performance list.

“We welcome any and all singers, musicians and choirs to this event,” he said. “Please email me at dgscap@yahoo.com to register or for more information. We want to make this a wonderful event for the community.”
