Donations are being sought to help a local family whose town of Busti home was destroyed in a fire that broke out late Sunday.

No injuries were reported in the blaze at 1619 Forest Ave. Ext., located just south of Jamestown at the intersection of Garfield Road. Firefighters from about a dozen south county departments were alerted to the fire around 11:30 p.m.

Crews from Busti, the city of Jamestown, Sugar Grove, Lakewood, Celoron, Kiantone, Frewsburg, Fluvanna, Gerry, Kennedy, Falconer, Ellery Center and Kennedy, among others, responded to Busti. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours.

In a message posted to Facebook on Monday, the Jamestown High School Marching Band said it was “saddened to hear” of the late night fire. The property’s owners, Dave and Kris Paterniti, have long been associated with the marching band.

“They are great people who are always willing to help out. Now they are the ones that could use some help and support,” the organization said.

The Jamestown High School Marching Band is encouraging monetary donations to be sent by Venmo to Kris Paterniti. She can be found on the mobile payment service (@Kristina-Paterniti).

Kris Paterniti, who is in Florida, said her husband made it out of their home safely with their cat. “He has the clothes he threw on and his coat,” she posted on Facebook.

Contacted Monday, Paterniti said both of her children were part of the Jamestown High School Marching Band. She said her husband was pit crew chief for 15 years while she was band booster president for six years.

“We were both very involved for years, even after the kids graduated,” she said in thanking the marching band for offering support.

A review by the Fire Investigation Team with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that the fire started in the area of a wood stove and chimney within the residence. However, due to extensive damage and the need to demolish the property, investigators were unable to complete a more thorough review, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Meanwhile, the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities said a water main break due to hydrants providing water would cause some discolored water for customers. The water was expected to clear in 12 to 24 hours, the BPU said.

Starting at $4.00/week.
