One person was killed and another was seriously injured when a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 86 struck another head-on early Thursday morning.

Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone confirmed the fatality, which occurred in the westbound lane of the interstate in the town of North Harmony. Sheriff’s deputies at 5:08 a.m. had been alerted to an eastbound vehicle in the westbound lane; moments later, the county 911 center received word of a head-on collision.

Firefighters from Ashville and Bemus Point, along with Chautauqua County EMS and a county coroner, responded to the interstate.

Quattrone confirmed a man traveling west in the westbound lane died in the crash. The driver of the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction was treated for serious injuries, though an update on their condition wasn’t known.

The names of the drivers were not released Thursday, and an investigation into the crash was ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office said in a brief news release.

An accident reconstruction team responded to the interstate, a portion of which was closed to traffic for several hours.
